@alfiemoore There may have been a bit of ambiguity in the kitchen instructions for the day and a misunderstanding and indeed some confusion , I think we should wait to hear his side of the story . I'm sure it will all make sense and the truth will out.
@WeHaveWaysPod so of the 20k, how many were in France/Northern Europe and what were they doing? Was it only short term awol or full time. Was it black market related? And at the end, how did they get repatriated. So many questions! @almurray@burbridge_stu@James1940@soave1000
On this day in 1945, a U.S. Army private named Eddie Slovik is shot at Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France for desertion. As many as 21,000 other GIs face courts martial for similar offences during WW2, but the 24-year-old Detroit native is the only one to be executed.
I've often wondered what I have in common with the great Generals of the 2nd WW. After over 700 episodes of @WeHaveWaysPod , 2 festivals and a few books by @almurray & @James1940 . I've realised it's Gen Dwight Eisenhower ! The same Xmas China! @eisenhowergroup@royalworcester
@burbridge_stu @ckolonko Lord Francis George NORTH. Major Royal Artillery 144 Field reg. Not a brigadier though! The Coroner said "I wonder whether any real harm would be done by a notice warning the public?"
Strewth! health & safety gone bonkers !
@burbridge_stu @ckolonko I think that was Lord North s son at Waldershare Park. Summer 1940.Walking with his mother to the main house. Went under a barbed wire fence. No signage. Coroner was a bit "ah well, there's a war on" not sure what rank he was.
@jamesjhistory Mixed feelings. Uncle Donald was practising low flying in L7907. Currently resident in Little Rissington. Obviously he needed the practice!
@WeHaveWaysPod@Corriere @philippesands @almurray@James1940@burbridge_stu just catching up with my podcasts! Can you translate the whole letter? Trying to understand context of the whole missive. Obviously if you're not too busy !
