Aug 5, Melton said this on his two-strike execution: "It's been several starts now where my two-strike execution hasn't been up to par… I just have to improve in that area, and I know I can. It's frustrating to leave strikeouts on the table"
Not often you get a pitcher criticizing themself on a specific thing they want to show better results in when they are coming off spell where they allowed 0 runs in back to back games.
He had 1 game since then against San Fransisco where he finished with 5 Ks against a Giants team that was swinging early in counts to limit chances but he still had a nice 29% whiff rate and 38% chase rate. Both Solid numbers to expect at least 5 strikeouts for a guy that is very likely going at least 6 innings.
Since the break, he has used his fastball grouping less on the 2-count settling under 50% usage on those chances in 3 of his last 4 games. This is something good to see because here are his splits by pitch group on the 2-count:
Fastball: 18% whiff rate, 18% putaway rate
Breaking: 37% whiff rate, 26% putaway rate
Offspeed: 37% whiff rate, 22% putaway rate
And most importantly, heavy splits against right handed hitters with a 26.4% K% against them and just a 19.2% strikeout rate to lefties. White Sox have done us a favor here and left 4 righties in the lineup.
Melton has 5+ Ks in 5/5 with 4+ RHHs and if I filter out teams that ranked in the lowest-7 Pitcher-adjusted rate vs RHPs L14 days leading up to it, he has 9, 9 and 5 strikeouts. The game with 5, he reached that mark at just 65 pitches and it was his first game with Valencia as his catcher.
It is worth mentioning that while the sample size is smaller, Valencia currently leads the league among catchers in called-strike-rate on pitches in the shadow zone (pitches within 1 inch of the inside/outside of the strike-zone border).
WHAT A FINISH 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Brazil vs. Norway o2.5 goals (-135) ✅
UNBELIEVABLE 🤯🤯 We were unjustly goalless though 78 minutes despite a combined 2.54 xG. Then Haaland dunks on Brazil, we get a penalty in the 96th minute, and Brazil convert after missing a pen in the 1st half. WE JUST CAN’T MISS RN 🔥🔥🔥
