Many thanks to Colonel @chungk1031 for presenting the #CriticalCare Grand Rounds for @CUSOMAnesthesia today on the topic of innovative approaches to novel extracorporeal blood purification to reduce pathogens, neurotoxins, and more!
The updated Covid shot is here! CDC recommends everyone 6 months & older get an updated Covid vaccine. Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness. Make your plan now to get your updated Covid and flu shot!
A groundbreaking study, co-led by @CCTSI leader @AditGinde, MD, MPH and published by @NEJM, reveals that a noninvasive ventilation method drastically reduces the risk of #hypoxemia and #cardiacarrest compared to a standard oxygen mask. https://t.co/UyuOLDIeDN
@CUCombatCenter
🤝 @CUCombatCenter was proud to partner with @AditGinde and University of Colorado to obtain funding for this breakthrough study from the @DoD_DHA, through our partners at the U.S. Air Force 59th Medical Wing Science and Technology Office. 👏
Congratulations to Assoc Professor of #Anesthesiology Cristina Wood, MD and the Assoc Professor of Psychiatry Allison Dempsey, PhD on receiving a NIH R34 grant for 3 years: Preventing Maternal Mood, Anxiety, and Trauma Symptoms after Cesarean Delivery. #obanesthesia#nih
We look forward to launching this clinical trial next month @uchealth to learn whether etomidate or ketamine prior to emergency intubation is better for patient outcomes. Over 2000 patients will be enrolled at 6 US centers. @CUAnschutz@CUEmergency@CUCombatCenter@PCCRG@PCORI
Team #SAVEO2 representing at #SCCM2024
SAVEO2 is done enrolling. In this randomized, stepped-wedge trial across 8 ICUs, including #BAMC
A protocol was put in place to prompt clinicians to drive down supplemental oxygen with an O2 saturation floor of 90%. The goal was room air, including vented patients.
The bottom line:
-This method is safe and effective
-Less is more with O2
-Trend towards better outcomes with less O2

A systematic review with meta-analysis finds no benefit to the use of 4-factor PCC for traumatic hemorrhage.
This really changes nothing right now. Only one study included was an RCT, and the rest were observational. The real answers will come from the REPLACE, FiiRST-2, Prehospital 4F-PCC, and Early Bunching of FF-PCC trials.

Dr. O2 (aka @JoshDouin) presented some preliminary data from our SAVEO2 burn 🫁 🔥 trial. Key takeaway points:
-Rapid reduction of FIO2 to room air is safe and feasible
-Trend towards more days off oxygen all together
-No apparent risk of harm from lower O2 targets other than possible slower wound healing

Congratulations @AditGinde , MD, MPH, and the Strategy to Avoid Excess Oxygen (SAVE-O2) team, for receiving the 2023 Outstanding Research Accomplishment award for at the Military Health System Research Symposium (#MHSRS) this morning!
Congratulations to Professor Ana Fernandez-Bustamante, MD, PhD and Clinical Professor Adrian Hendrickse, MD on their respective faculty promotions. We are fortunate to have their time and talent devoted to our patients, trainees and the ongoing science of #Anesthesiology.
Congratulations continue for our CU Anesthesiology 2023 faculty promotions. Our newly minted Associate Professors from left to right are: Luis Verduzco, MD; Inge Tamm-Daniels, MD; Naveen Kukreja, MD; Quen Ly, MD; Samuel Gilliland, MD; and Eric Clambey, PhD. All are exceptional!

Primary outcome - successful intubation on first attempt:
Use of a VL cut in half the incidence of failure to intubate
operators with least prior experience benefited the most from use
