In June 1992, Gloria Davey pushed through dense undergrowth during a Women’s Institute walk in Norfolk and found gravestones. Behind them was a church almost swallowed by ivy. She got inside. By then the roof was failing, the tower was cracked, burial vaults had been exposed and the abandoned building showed signs of satanic use.
Her husband Bob was a retired agricultural engineer and a churchwarden. When Gloria told him what she had found at St Mary’s, Houghton-on-the-Hill, he decided he could not leave a consecrated church that way. He began clearing the churchyard. Then the church. What started as tidying became the work of the rest of his life.
With a few volunteers and support from Norfolk County Council, Bob cut back the ivy, repaired walls, reroofed the nave and chancel, put glass back in the windows, laid a floor and rebuilt the north doorway. The bell tower was repaired too. The original bell was found, lifted back into place and rang for the Millennium.
Then, in 1996, the restoration changed completely. A contractor noticed paint in a corner of the nave. According to Bob, when plaster came away, “The first thing I saw was the head of an angel.” Beneath later plaster were layers of medieval paintings, including an extraordinary late-11th-century scheme now regarded as one of the most complete early medieval sets in Britain.
Some may date to around 1090. The east wall includes a rare early image of the Trinity and Last Judgement. A church that had been left open to rain and ivy was holding Christian art that had survived for roughly nine centuries without anyone understanding what was still there.
Experts stepped in. In 2006 the Friends of St Mary’s received £191,500 from the Heritage Fund for conservation of the wall paintings. Bob had already spent years doing work himself, finding money and persuading others to help. He later received an MBE for services to church restoration.
St Mary’s is still a consecrated Anglican church. Volunteers care for it, welcome visitors and keep the place open, and worship returned after decades of silence. The deserted medieval village around Houghton-on-the-Hill largely disappeared. Its little church survived — and because one couple refused to walk past a ruin, so did a remarkable thousand-year record of Christian faith.
went to the Batman 2 set in Glasgow and one of the security people said that they have to search the set for Irn Bru cans every night because the locals are trying to sneak one into the film and they keep popping up in the bins and hot dog stands lmao

@afneil There were more Episcopalians at Culloden than Catholics. They were against the supremacy of the Presbyterian church. So they supported the Jacobites.
It's astonishing to me that there are people who will write ad nauseam about how feminism and academic texts that hardly anyone has read, ie, Judith Butler, are responsible for men claiming to be women and forcing themselves into spaces where women and children are naked - while ignoring the influence of the most widely consumed form of media in the world - pornography.
The concept of a "girl cock" or "gock" as these men call it, didn't come from Simone de Beauvoir. These men didn't read the massive tome titled "The Second Sex" (not gender, ahem), and it didn't come from Butler's obtuse word salad, either.
What lies behind the transgender/transsexual movement has always been the determination of the male sexual drive, and beyond the profits to be made and the observable homophobia, first and foremost at its bare bones is the ugly hatred of women by men with sexual pathologies.
These men dress up as women and mimic us because they have for a long time watched pornography depicting women being degraded. In their actions, they imagine themselves as the humiliated women they see in porn, and they are telling us out loud what they want to do to us. To humiliate, dehumanize, and degrade us.
They get support from the highest institutions of society, including the WHO and the APA.
I wake up every day angry about this, but also, that this isn't obvious to everyone.
Today, Scottish Rape Crisis Alliance member centres published an open letter responding to Dr Q Manivannan MSP's comments on rape.
We are not demonising rape. We are naming it - and the harm, fear and trauma it causes.
Survivors deserve better. Women and girls deserve better. Scotland must do better.

@Mark1957 With all our shiny new drone technology, surely we could identify and sink a few of these people carriers before the hapless migrants get on board. The traffickers could then be picked up and jailed. A few successes would soon put a stop to this.
I woke up this morning with a terrible hangover…to the sound of my neighbour mowing his lawn.
I was going to get up.
Then I thought …
No….fuck it,he can mow around me.
@jonormoi@thatmarkperkins It's not that great when buyers wait until the settlement date (completion) to enter into a binding contract. It's just as stressful!
Today as part of my commitment to being the Far Right Dregs of Humanity, I will be emailing a hospital to ask for their policies on single sex wards after being contacted by a friend in distress on a female ward who is being told a male patient is female and has ‘every right’ to be there.
Hopefully this will still leave me with enough time to invade the Sudetenland this afternoon.
