Apple just made Docker Desktop optional on Mac.

And it is completely free.

This is apple/container. 26.5k stars no Github.

You can now run Linux containers natively on your Mac without installing Docker Desktop, without a background daemon hogging your RAM, and without paying $21 a month per developer for a commercial license.

Here is what it does:

→ Runs Linux containers as lightweight VMs directly on Apple Silicon using macOS 26 virtualization
→ Fully OCI compatible. Pull any image from Docker Hub, GitHub Container Registry or anywhere else
→ Written in Swift and optimised specifically for Apple Silicon. Faster and lighter than anything Docker Desktop does on Mac
→ Standard container CLI syntax. If you know Docker commands you already know how to use this
→ Push images you build to any standard container registry and run them anywhere

Docker Desktop charges $21 per developer per month for commercial use. Apple's version costs nothing and ships as open source under Apache-2.0.

Microsoft made Docker Desktop optional on Windows with WSL Containers last month.

Apple just did the same on Mac.

Docker is not going anywhere. But the era of paying for a GUI wrapper around containers on your own machine is quietly ending.

C'était malheureusement exactement le sens de mon message au Ministre @BrunoRetailleau lors de notre rencontre sur les enjeux de sécurité liés à l’écosystème crypto.

Quiconque s'estimant en danger (peu importe le sujet ou le contexte) devrait avoir le droit de pouvoir porter sur soi une arme de défense légale et accessible comme un spray au poivre.

Et ceci sans prendre le risque de se retrouver arrêté ou de devoir cacher son existence aux forces de l'ordre.

Il faut en effet savoir que si la vente de spray de moins de 100ml est libre, son port est INTERDIT et peut déclencher une verbalisation ou une garde à vue.

I don’t think RSC itself being a React feature is a problem - it unlocks some interesting patterns.

The issue is the tradeoffs involved in making it work. It leaks into, or even demands control over layers that are previously not in scope for client-side frameworks. This creates heavy complexity (and associated mental overhead) in order to get the main benefits it promises.

React team made a bet that they can work with Next team to polish the DX to the extent that the benefit would essentially be free - so that RSC can be a silver bullet for all kinds of apps, and that it would become the idiomatic way to use React. IMO, that bet has failed.

THE WAR FOR TALENT

Are there countries that want capital and talent? Of course there are. The UAE is all in on this. And they already attract more millionaires per year than the US, with 1/30 the population:

They're also recruiting heavily for talent. They have visa programs where you can just self sponsor yourself and get approval quickly, rather than waiting years through the byzantine American process. The green visa is an example:

As a consequence, more than 240,000 Brits have already moved to Dubai, along with literally millions of people of Indian origin. The country has only ~1M native Emiratis so more than 80% of the residents are mobile workers, both skilled and unskilled.

You can't become a UAE citizen unless you're globally exceptional like Pavel Durov. But in practice this isn't a big deal for most skilled workers. It's like working at Google where you get access to the cafeteria so long as you're employed there. Similarly, so long as you can support yourself and obey the law, you can likely get to the UAE and build a life there.

And if you can't get into the UAE? Well, they aren't the only country recruiting for talent. So is the rest of the world. Dozens of countries have opened up digital nomad, remote worker, and golden visa programs. Because they want talented, law-abiding people to come in, work hard, and enrich their economy.

Only those places which have inherited vast wealth (but forgotten how to build it) are contemptuous towards global talent and capital.

Because in the internet era the cloud has leverage too. You just need a laptop, a coffee shop, and a welcoming jurisdiction. And there are many of them.
