🟢🇺🇳🇪🇺 World Hepatitis Day 2026 | Hepatitis C: The first chronic viral infection we can cure.
#Hepatitis C is no longer a life sentence. It is one of the few chronic viral infections that can be cured.
Today, highly effective Direct-Acting Antiviral (#DAA) therapies can cure more than 95% of people in just 8–12 weeks, preventing cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer.
Yet #millions of people across Europe are still living with #hepatitis C without knowing it.
Because hepatitis C is often silent, liver damage may already be advanced when symptoms appear.
Why should you get tested?
🩸 A simple blood test can change — and save — your life.
Early diagnosis means:
✅ Curative treatment
✅ Prevention of liver cirrhosis
✅ Prevention of liver cancer
✅ Protection of your family and community
✅ No further transmission after cure
Europe has a unique opportunity.
With effective screening, linkage to care and universal access to treatment, #hepatitis C elimination is achievable.
The tools already exist.
Now we need:
✔ More testing
✔ Better awareness
✔ Equal access to treatment
✔ Political commitment to eliminate hepatitis C across Europe.
One test. One treatment. One cure. Thousands of lives saved.
Together, we can make hepatitis C the first chronic viral disease eliminated in Europe.

#WorldHepatitisDay 2026 | One liver. Multiple threats. One chance to act.
#Hepatitis B, C or D + #Obesity + #MASLD/#MASH is not just an addition of risks — it can multiply liver damage.
1️⃣ If you are living with Hepatitis B, C or D
Adding obesity or MASLD/MASH can accelerate:
🟠 Liver inflammation
🟠 Fibrosis
🟠 Cirrhosis
🟠 Liver cancer (HCC)
🟠 Liver failure
2️⃣ If you don't know you have viral hepatitis
The combination can silently damage your liver for years without symptoms, while increasing the risk of serious complications before diagnosis.
3️⃣ Why it matters today
Europe now has a unique opportunity to prevent thousands of deaths through:
✅ Hepatitis B vaccination, Treatment and hope for Functional cure
✅ Hepatitis C cure
✅ Hepatitis D treatment
✅ Early testing and diagnosis
✅ Obesity prevention
✅ MASLD/MASH detection and management
The earlier we identify every risk factor, the more lives we can save.
Protect Liver Health. Protect Public Health.

🚨 As European #FattyLiverMonth in Europe comes to an end, our work is far from over.
This month has helped raise awareness, but awareness alone is not enough. It is time to turn knowledge into action and place liver health where it belongs—at the heart of the public health agenda.
Steatotic Liver Disease (SLD/MASLD) is no longer "just" a liver disease. It is one of the strongest examples of how chronic diseases are deeply interconnected.
🔶 ⚖️ Obesity
🔶 🩸 Type 2 Diabetes
🔶 ❤️ Cardiovascular Disease
🔶 🧠 Stroke
🔶 🎗️ Cancer
🔶 🫀 Liver Cirrhosis
🔶 🫶 Liver Transplantation
These conditions share the same risk factors, accelerate one another, and place an enormous burden on patients, families, healthcare professionals, and health systems across Europe.
⚠️ Yet millions of people are still living with liver disease without knowing it.
That is why we must activate the alarm even louder.
📢 We need stronger prevention policies.
🔍 Earlier detection and integrated screening programmes.
🤝 Better collaboration across medical specialties.
👨⚕️ A multidisciplinary approach that connects #liver, #cardiology, #diabetology, #oncology, #neurology, #obesity care, #transplantation, and #primarycare.
🏛️Recognising liver health as a public health priority brings European and national initiatives together, driving integrated action across obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer and transplantation—because better liver health means better public health. 💙
💙 Protecting liver health means protecting the entire person—not just one organ.
Every FibroScan performed, every conversation started, every policy changed, and every life saved brings us closer to a healthier Europe.
Together, let's ensure that the momentum of #FattyLiverMonth** does not end today.
🚨 Let's make liver health impossible to ignore.
Protect Liver Health. Protect Public Health.

As #FattyLiverMonth comes to a close, we are proud to see our work featured in The Parliament Magazine, highlighting why #liverhealth must become a central pillar of Europe's public health agenda.
From the #EuropeanLiverScreeningTour to the ELPA #LiverHealthPreventionVillage at the #EuropeanParliament, ELPA continues to demonstrate that prevention, early detection, education, and community engagement can bring liver health closer to every citizen.
Today, Europe has a unique opportunity to place liver health at the heart of its major health initiatives. The upcoming EU Cardiovascular Health Plan (Safe Hearts Plan), Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, the European Action Plan for Rare Diseases, and the EU4Health Programme... create an unprecedented framework to integrate liver health across prevention, screening, treatment, research, and innovation.
This means ensuring that liver health is fully embedded across the entire spectrum of liver diseases—from #SLD, #MASLD and #MASH to #hepatitis B, C and D, #livercancer, #rareliverdiseases, #livertransplantation... —while recognising their strong links with #cardiovascular, #metabolic, #kidney, and #oncological diseases.
This recognition reflects the dedication of our members, partners, healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, and patient advocates who continue working together to ensure that liver health is recognised as a cornerstone of public health.
Together, we will continue turning awareness into action and building a future where every European has access to prevention, early detection, timely diagnosis, and equitable care.
Thank you to The Parliament Magazine for helping bring this important conversation to policymakers and readers across Europe.

Every #child living with #liverdisease deserves more than excellent pediatric care—they deserve a future where no one is left behind.
At the ESPGHAN Congress, ELPA Vice President Julio Burman delivered a powerful message on one of the most critical yet often overlooked moments in a young patient's journey: the transition from pediatric to adult care.
Transition is not simply changing doctors. It is a life-changing step into a completely different healthcare system. For many young people, it means leaving behind trusted healthcare teams and entering an unfamiliar environment where they often feel alone, unsupported, and uncertain.
Across Europe, the reality is unequal. While some countries have well-established multidisciplinary transition clinics that ensure continuity of care, many still lack structured pathways, forcing adolescents and their families to navigate this journey on their own.
At ELPA, we believe this must change.
Every young person deserves a safe, coordinated, and patient-centered transition—one that protects not only their liver health, but also their confidence, independence, mental well-being, and quality of life.
The most successful transition programmes are built with patients, not only for patients. Young people and families must be equal partners in designing services because their lived experience provides insights that no guideline alone can deliver.
#Children are not just patients—they are our #future. Investing in seamless transition means investing in healthier adults, better outcomes, fewer complications, and stronger healthcare systems.
Together, let us ensure that every child with liver disease enters adulthood with confidence, continuity of care, and hope.
💛 Every child deserves a future.
💙 Every transition deserves support.
🌍 Every voice deserves to be heard.

During the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Global Liver Institute, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt, convened a high-level policy side event to elevate SLD as a global public health priority.
ELPA – was proud to contribute to this important discussion, with our Director Milan Mishkovikj representing the voice of patients and highlighting the crucial role of patient advocacy in shaping the future of #liverhealth.
The adoption of the WHO Resolution recognizing steatotic liver disease as part of the global noncommunicable disease (NCD) response is far more than a policy achievement—it is a message of hope.
Hope that liver health will finally be fully integrated into national and international public health strategies.
Hope that awareness will be transformed into action
Hope that patients will benefit from early detection programmes, integrated care pathways, and equitable access to prevention and treatment
But resolutions alone are not enough. The real challenge begins now: implementation
For the first time in history, we have an opportunity to combine strong policy commitments with meaningful funding mechanisms that can support:
🩺 Early detection and screening programmes
❤️ Integration of liver health into #cardiovascular disease prevention
🩸 #Diabetes and #obesity strategies
🎗️ #Cancer prevention and control programmes
🧠 #Stroke prevention initiatives
🫀 #Transplantation strategies
🌍 Community #outreach and #public awareness programmes
This marks the beginning of a new era where liver health is no longer addressed in isolation, but as a central pillar of the global NCD agenda
Patients' lived experiences must continue to shape policies, research, healthcare delivery, and innovation. From reducing stigma to improving access to care, patient advocacy remains one of the strongest drivers of meaningful change
The liver is the silent organ connecting many of today's greatest public health challenges. As patient advocates, we can no longer afford to treat obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and liver disease as separate conditions. They are deeply interconnected, share common risk factors, and require integrated solutions
ELPA is proud to stand alongside Global Liver Institute, governments, patient organisations, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and partners worldwide who made this historic milestone possible
We celebrate a landmark achievement.
Tomorrow, we begin the work of turning this resolution into healthier lives for millions of people around the world
Together, we move from recognition to implementation, from policy to action, and from hope to impact

💙 Millions of people are at risk of liver disease without knowing it. For many, barriers to healthcare, education, and screening can delay diagnosis until it is too late.
But together, we can change that.
Every person deserves the chance to:
🩺 Understand their risk.
💙 Access early screening.
💛 Receive timely care.
🌍 Live a healthier future.
Awareness is more than information—it is empowerment.
Prevention is more than a choice—it is an opportunity.
Early detection is more than a test—it can save lives.
Let's work together to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to liver health.

@NCereijo@madorni SI, TOTALMENTE y QUE LE DEN RECLUSION PERPETUA. BUENO ESA CONDENA EN ARGENTINA NO EXISTE (PORQUE MUCHOS POLITICOS EMPRESARIOS y PERIODISTAS), LA MERECERIAN. PERO DEBERIA SER ACEPTADA y PUESTA EN VIGENCIA. LA PRISION HASTA MORIR ES UNA BUENA CONDENA PARA MUCHOS.
Europe is entering a new era in healthcare — and #liverhealth must be at the heart of it.
#Hepatitis B, C and D are not just #infectious diseases.
They are among the leading causes of #livercancer in Europe.
But today, for the first time in history, we have the tools to change this story.
✅ #Hepatitis C can be cured.
✅ #Hepatitis B can be prevented through vaccination.
✅ #Hepatitis D can be prevented by protecting against #Hepatitis B — and today, treatment for #Hepatitis D finally exists.
✅ Functional cure strategies for #Hepatitis B are becoming a real possibility.
This changes everything.
Because eliminating viral hepatitis means preventing thousands of liver cancer cases across Europe.
This is exactly why ELPA — the European Liver Patients’ Association — fought to ensure hepatitis became part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
Many saw hepatitis only as an infectious disease.
ELPA saw the bigger picture.
We saw the connection between prevention, testing, treatment and cancer elimination.
We saw the opportunity for integration.
And we insisted that liver cancer prevention through hepatitis elimination had to become part of Europe’s future health strategy.
Today, Europe is moving toward a new vision of healthcare:
more integrated,
more preventive,
more personalised,
more equitable.
The Critical Medicines Act.
The Pharmaceutical Reform Package.
The Biotech Act.
Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
These are not isolated initiatives.
Together, they represent political will.
A commitment to innovation.
A commitment to prevention.
A commitment to saving lives.
Now the question is no longer:
“Can we eliminate hepatitis in Europe?”
The question is:
“How fast can we do it?”
The future is already beginning.
And ELPA will continue leading the way —
to eliminate hepatitis,
to reduce liver cancer,
and to build a healthier Europe for all.
Stay tuned.
The next chapter of liver health in Europe is coming.

Today marks an important step forward for #LiverHealth in Europe 🇪🇺🇺🇳 — and a powerful reminder that together we are stronger 💪 #ELPA#EASL#WHOEurope#EUHealth...
At the launch of the EASL–Lancet Commission 2.0 in Brussels, leaders, experts, scientists, and patient advocates came together with one clear mission: turning evidence into real impact.
Representing the voice of patients, ELPA President Marko Korenjak highlighted a simple but crucial truth — policies and science only matter when they truly reach people.
The European liver patient perspective is not just important — it is essential.
It means:
✔ earlier diagnosis
✔ equal access to care across all countries
✔ stronger prevention strategies
✔ dignity for every person living with liver disease
Because behind every statistic is a life, a family, a future.
Now is the time to move from discussion to action.
Now is the time to build sustainable liver health systems that leave no patient behind.
Together, we can shape a healthier Europe — where every patient voice is heard and every life matters.
