His life, as brilliant as his pen, was cut tragically short when he died following complications from a brain tumour. Yet his legacy lives on in the echoes of laughter he left behind — a reminder of a man who used humour to hold a mirror to our politics, our absurdities, and our humanity.

IFRS 9 -The Standard That Refuses to Go Quiet

Of all the IFRS (Standards ) I’ve taught and reviewed over the years, none features more prominently than IFRS 9.

Despite being in force for several years, a careful review of many financial statements still reveals gaps in application ; sometimes by design, but often due to limited technical capacity.

One of the most fundamental shifts under IFRS 9 is in how credit losses are ,recognized , measured and reported in financial statements.

Gone are the days when impairment was a matter of management judgment or historical “bad debt provisions.”

Under IFRS 9, impairment is about Expected Credit Loss (ECL) - a structured, evidence-based model grounded on:

1️⃣ Historical default experience,
2️⃣ Current credit risk profiles, and
3️⃣ Forward-looking macroeconomic indicators.

The ECL model demands data, analytics and documentation not estimates made from instinct, experience or routine.

And that’s why IFRS 9 continues to stand out ; not because it’s new, but because it continues to challenge institutions to evolve their approach to credit risk measurement and financial reporting.

In practice, what separates compliant institutions from those merely reporting numbers is how well they’ve embedded IFRS 9 into their credit culture.

For forward-looking institutions , IFRS 9 isn’t just a reporting requirement , it’s a strategic tool for managing credit risk, pricing loans more accurately, and building investor confidence.

Participated in the 8th National Development Implementation Committee's (NDIC) Governance and Public Administration Sub-Committee meeting at Harambee House, chaired by Dr. @ray_omollo , PS Interior and National Administration. Among other key areas of discussion aligned with the realization of the Bottom Up Economic Economic Transformative Agenda (BETA), I led my team in apprising the meeting on the progress made in developing the Government’s Legislative Agenda Tracking Information System (LATIS).

LATIS is a ground-breaking tool that leverages technology to digitize and streamline the tracking and reporting of progress in Government’s policy and legislative reform efforts. It is designed to enhance operational efficiency by ensuring timely and continuous monitoring of policy and legislative proposals. The tool aims to ensure compliance with standard norms and legal requirements for the development of policy and law, improve transparency, accountability as well as provide greater information management capacities. The appraisal sets the stage for the piloting phase of LATIS’ Bills Module.
