I'm going to do a Twitter Thing and see what happens.
I read a scientific paper or two most every day. Have for a while. All kinds of fields. Occasionally even understand them
So, I'm going to chat about them! No rhyme or reason, just pulling stuff from my endless open tabs 1/
I bit the bullet and got @KagiHQ and am so pleased. Nothing really makes more sense to pay for online than search, and it just feels fun- I'm bumping into things that feel like they're from a less-enshittified age of the web
@ryxcommar I seem to remember an editorial (from @GreatDismal, maybe?) about how we were expecting brains in boxes and instead had gotten coral reefs made of other people.
@sleepnir @BeijingPalmer @dburbach@jeff_foust Oh no, an actual methanol and oxygen synthesis plant. Carbon dioxide (to be derived from the Martian atmosphere) and hydrogen (to be imported from Earth) went in, methanol and oxygen for rocket fuel came out. Begged, borrowed and stole and built catalysts, tubing, pumps...
@TheSpaceshipper There was a behind the scenes shot of McAvoy running down a row of mini trampolines when he gets sandtrout- super- speed that always cheers me up
@qntm Applies to FX too- the decision to make it look like *something*, to express a specific visual intent rather than just put 'realism' in the center of these screen, is substantially future- proofing
@gerrycanavan It's such a doofy way to overliteralize notions about rounded villains- they *think* they are the good guys, they don't actually need to be doing some greater good gambit. It's okay for them to just be greedy and selfish.
@xenocryptsite@ptmoria@Fyodor32768@4thClassOfficer We never really see Anakin have any power or make any choices, so there's not really any way to see him using his power to make increasingly self-serving and expedient choices at the cost of others- you know, actually turning to the dark side...
@AoDespair@ClaraJeffery Voting every four years in a presidential election is absolutely the lowest possible fruit of participating in civil society- you bang out the least bad choice in five minutes and then have literally every other lever to improve political life at your disposal.
@bcmerchant The fraction of people who don't clock that the CEOs of tech companies promising or warning about the next big thing are first and foremost salesman and not dispassionate analysts never ceases to frustrate me.
Word of the day is ‘phrontistery’ (17th century): a place to withdraw to for thinking or contemplation.
If no phrontistery is available, then to ‘latibulate’ is to find a corner and hide in it.
“Besides, I’m not in the mood for all this today. I have no desire to demonstrate, surprise, amuse, or persuade. My goal is absolute rest. To know nothing, to teach nothing, to want nothing, to sense nothing, to sleep, and then to sleep more.”
—Charles Baudelaire
