Folks, this thread and these stories are really important. We’ve got to change the trajectory of this story. #callCongress

[Shawn VanDiver @shawnjvandiver]

On Monday, about 30 Afghans held in one ICE facility in Pennsylvania were told on the same day: you're going to Louisiana, and you'll be deported at the start of November.
Since then my phone hasn't stopped.
We're getting reports like it from 6 states.
Another #AfghanEvac 🧵

[#AfghanEvac @afghanevac]

Launched today: the push to 218.

A new nationwide effort to force a House vote on the bipartisan Afghanistan TPS Act before this Congress ends. Here's what it is, why it can work, and how anyone in the U.S. can help.

BREAKING: Trump admin lays groundwork for mass deportation of resettled refugees with new regulation.

"This regulation represents another escalation against immigrants with lawful status and these tactics lay the groundwork for the mass de-documentation and deportation of refugees. IRAP calls on USCIS to rescind the rule immediately and for Congress to exercise its authority to prevent this injustice from being carried out.”

Ohio’s Republican governor says Haitians helped Springfield come back. Their work permits expired in July. Should Congress let them stay?

This administration's hatred toward even legal immigrants seemingly knows no bounds.
"Taken together, these policy changes create the effect of treating refugee protection as a status subject to continual scrutiny, rather than the durable commitment Congress intended."

[Krish O'Mara Vignarajah @KrishVignarajah]

These refugee families did everything asked of them. They submitted to interviews, background checks, and years of waiting abroad, only setting foot on U.S. soil once government officials approved their applications.

[Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex]

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

NEW: The 4th Circuit denied Trump admin's request to apply the travel ban to asylee family members.

“We are overjoyed that asylees will continue to be able to reunite with their families in safety in the U.S. as a result of this decision.”

Appreciated listening to French Christians as I researched this article for @CTmagazine to learn how the summer of heat waves affected them and their communities.

ICE is holding more pregnant women in detention than ever. Its most recent miscarriage data is from October 2025. That's almost a year with no count. Who is keeping track of what happens to these women?

A federal judge ordered 3,000 Chief of Mission decisions for Afghan allies in August.

State issued 752.

The reason it gave the court: summer vacation.

916, then 811, then 752.

“It’s really important for communities to hear directly from the administration through the formal process that the law has established to let communities know you know how to prepare and how to navigate this uncertainty.” https://t.co/Agpcx6Kfv3

Thats how 82-year-old Barbara Kyriakakis explained the national unity after 9/11 to 23-year-old Micayla Cranford, who wasn't born yet.

We met both at a George Mason University class taught every 5 years about 9/11.

My latest report to #HRC63 finds that, five years on, repression in Afghanistan is no longer a series of isolated edicts—it is a system. My new report shows how Taliban decrees and practices reach into nearly every part of life, reshaping society through fear, exclusion and ideological control. The report also focuses on the situation of children in #Afghanistan - see below.

[Jan Egeland @NRC_Egeland]

I’m back in Afghanistan, for the fifth time since the Taliban took control back in 2021.

NRC stayed throughout the turmoil and uncertainty, but each time I have been back since I have witnessed the ongoing erosion of living conditions and basic rights. We can now freely move around in a peaceful Afghanistan, but each time I have seen a smaller and smaller humanitarian response, starved of funding despite the immense needs here.

This week I have met mothers who do not have anything to give their children. I have met with families who have been forcibly returned from Pakistan and return with nothing, to a country that is completely unable to support millions more people. And I have met with parents who desperately want their daughters to receive an education.

My NRC colleagues here are doing amazing work, but our operations are being severely limited by a lack of funding. When NATO countries hastily withdrew, they promised not to forget the people of Afghanistan. What we see on the ground are promises forgotten and a population that is utterly ignored.

Before Oct 1 the President signs the FY2027 refugee admissions determination. This year's ceiling went from 7,500 to 17,500, and Afghan mission partners got zero of it. Congress has to be consulted first. I just told mine to count them in. https://t.co/bgfLSsmAQM
