@timmiclark@greg_ashman Where some of us transition to explicit teaching when they can’t get discovery learning to work, others of us can get discovery learning to work!
@NicholasMarn@thechosenberg Asking the question is the opposite of writing off. It means that I am not going to make my decision based on the timeframe before I have context. If the answer were, “because I couldn’t be bothered” that would influence the decision differently from “because my dad had cancer”.
@BobLeBoeuf1@john_seelke@NateJoseph19@RandySwift9 We arrive at the ability to do without thinking one of two ways: either as a result of a lot of thinking, or as a result of no thinking. I know which one I would prefer to have behind my automaticity.
@MovedtoLearn Maybe I'm punk rock, but I would tell the district that the reason I had fallen behind in my grading responsibilities was because I had to teach during my lessons
The greatest problem teachers face in middle schools like mine is that the students don't have the foundational skills in place to be successful. So they tune out, act out, or elope. The curriculum programs don't scaffold; some even boast about how they are designed for struggle.
@MrZachG Is it the most heavily researched because it is the norm?
Medical research was predominantly conducted on white males, so our understanding of how med works was limited to that view point.
Is our understanding of how ed works limited to a viewpoint of one predominant model?
@MrZachG@eltplanning@RebelTeacherNet There’s a direct contradiction in terms here. Acquisition is explicitly in opposition to a didactic teaching approach—it’s what the term means. So if you’re not aware of that, you’re not familiar with SLA. Which is fine, of course. @eltplanning has offered some useful resources.
Agree completely. Teach what needs to be taught. Check for understanding. Reteach what has been missed and build on what has been learned. Check for understanding. Rinse & repeat.
Unpopular opinion: Standards-Based Grading, while better than other practices, is still part of a broken system. So is the distinction between 'formative' and 'summative' assessments. All external validators of learning erode intrinsic motivation. ⬇️
