Uganda stands at a defining moment.

First oil is within sight. New investments are reshaping the country's energy landscape. The decisions we make today will determine not only how much wealth we create, but whether that wealth translates into stronger institutions, better opportunities and lasting prosperity.

How prepared are we for this moment?

Are Ugandan businesses ready to participate meaningfully in the opportunities emerging from oil, gas and energy? Is our legal and regulatory framework fit for purpose? What lessons have we learned from the journey so far? What opportunities exist for lawyers, entrepreneurs, investors and young professionals? And what role must our institutions play if Uganda is to realise the full promise of its natural resources?

These questions demand more than commentary. They demand experience.

This Tuesday, we are joined by Innocent Kihika, Senior Partner at @SM_Co_Advocates one of Uganda's leading law firms and a member of the Board of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda. Few lawyers have enjoyed a closer view of the intersection between law, energy, investment and national development.

Our conversation will range from oil and gas to the wider energy sector, from local content and investment to the future of legal practice. We shall also discuss an issue of growing concern to the business community: the impact of judicial backlog and dispute resolution on investment, infrastructure development and economic growth.

If energy is the fuel of development, law is the framework that determines whether that fuel ignites prosperity.

Today, during Uganda’s Labour Day celebrations, Mr. Ali Ssekatawa, Director Legal and Corporate Affairs, PAU, received a Presidential Recognition Award for his outstanding contribution to the development of Uganda’s oil and gas sector.

Mr Ssekatawa was part of the distinguished government technical team that led the negotiation and conclusion of the commercial and legal frameworks underpinning Uganda’s landmark oil projects, culminating in the Final Investment Decision (FID) of over USD 15 billion in 2022, and the first tranche financial closure for EACOP in 2025. He has also been instrumental in countering the negative narrative against Uganda’s oil and gas developments, defending the project against international and local opposition to keep Uganda’s energy future on track.

Also recognised were Mr. Geoffrey Ogwang, Director Midstream, @MEMD_Uganda Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development; Mr. John Bosco Habumugisha, General Manager, @EACOP_ EACOP Ltd; and Mr. Gilbert Kamuntu, Chief Commercial Officer, @UNOC_UG Uganda National Oil Company, for their shared role in leading the government technical team that delivered the legal and commercial structures underpinning Uganda’s oil projects, and for their efforts in advancing the financial closure of EACOP in 2025.

Their distinguished service above self has significantly advanced Uganda’s energy security and economic independence. 👏🇺🇬

The entire copper industry has just returned from last week’s leading copper conference in Chile (CESCO), with participants, including the world’s largest copper traders, even more bullish that all-time-high copper prices could be tested over the coming weeks.

It’s become crystal clear that both China and the US are frantically stockpiling despite industrial supply chain uncertainties related to the conflict in Middle East.

The rivalry between the two superpowers could easily pull the king of metals up to $15,000 per tonne quicker than we can imagine.

PHOTOS: A fire has destroyed property worth millions of shillings in Makerere Kavule, where local youth operate a furniture workshop.

The cause of the fire remains unknown as the Uganda Police Force and members of the public continue efforts to contain the fire.
