Spain player is going for and to the ball, German player is going to the GK (more or less holds his position, setting a screen).

@DaleJohnsonBBC Don't have a big issue with Spain goal being disallowed however if the German foul was soft (it was) this is almost non-existent. Spain player is challenging for the ball, whereas Anton was not and did move towards the keeper when the ball was kicked to obstruct.

@spaulinnit @DaleJohnsonBBC These pictures show it well. Anton is holding the keeper, this extends to when the ball is in play. Everyone who is wanting to make a play on the ball is moving towards where the ball is going including the GK. Anton is moving towards the GK to impede him.

@GunnarGI @BBCMOTD Because the GK is heading towards where the ball is going, Anton is trying to impede the GK. If Anton moves towards where the ball is heading he could have legally blocked the GK. Instead he had his arms out and moved towards the GK. Foul. Soft, but foul.

@spaulinnit @DaleJohnsonBBC Once the ball is kicked you can't hold your arms out and around another player like that. What makes it obvious is that German player is moving away from where the ball is headed and GK is trying to move towards the ball when he is blocked. Soft yes, but still a foul.

@kpm584 @DaleJohnsonBBC Yes once the ball is kicked he's just obstructing the keeper. If his arms were down after the corner was taken it would have been ok and he'd have been a legal impediment. As it was I feel like if the keeper doesn't go down he's in a better position and likely saves it.

@DaleJohnsonBBC @kpm584 The VAR intervention is one part. The other is that the referee watched the replays and determined that the GK was disadvantaged/blocked. It was a soft VAR intervention and a soft foul, but still a foul esp. when FIFA stated they would not be allowing GK blocking.

Draw is a MUCH better result for Aus than Par who will face Germany. Aus will play Belgium/Iran/NZ or Egypt and have 4 more days to prepare.

@DaleJohnsonBBC It's tough to disagree with the first, but the Mexican forward is playing for that contact which is simultaneously smart play and borderline poor sportsmanship. They should have sent off the South African defender who put him onside!

@DaleJohnsonBBC The referee can still give a yellow if they determine this challenge to be reckless. 'Trying' to kick a ball by kicking through an opposing player could easily be considered reckless. Mosquera is very lucky not to have been carded.

@DaleJohnsonBBC That's the correct application of the rules, there is no distinguishment made between an attacking and defending player regarding deliberate handball. Accidental contact being handball applies explicitly to the scoring play or the immediate following play - not applied here.

@DaleJohnsonBBC To add what your article seems to miss is that it's Mbuemo's deliberate cradling/controlling the ball that makes this a handball. And this applies whether you're an attacking or defending player.

@DaleJohnsonBBC Are you going to reconsider your position on this now that PGMOL have categorically confirmed that the referee made a mistake in not calling this a handball (and disallowing the goal)? Also confirming that yes, if this was a defender it would have been rightfully given as a pen.
