This is exactly the point Hong is making: that she once was focused on white assimilation/blending in with the majority, and as a consequence didn’t pay too much attention to the unique challenges other groups faced. She literally is agreeing with Matt that being overly focused on (the white) race was bad, but people who spend all their time critiquing “woke” while not reading for understanding are easily tripped up.
