According to local sources, Ethiopian authorities have started arresting prominent Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church clergy and religious teachers in what observers believe is a crackdown on voices that publicly condemned the recent massacre of Orthodox Christians in Asko Woreda of East Arsi Zone, Oromia Region.
The arrests follow reports that more than 53 Orthodox Christians were killed, over 280 remain missing, hundreds of homes were destroyed, and the historic 101-year-old Telata Chefa St. Gabriel Church was burned during a large-scale attack allegedly carried out by Oromo Liberation Army (OLA/Shene) militants against Orthodox Christian communities in East Arsi Zone between May 31st to June 2nd.
Among those arrested is Deacon Zelalem Taye, a well-known young gospel preacher recognized for his teaching, counseling work, and extensive service to Orthodox Sunday schools. He was reportedly detained in Addis Ababa and is believed to have been targeted after writing about the killings of Christians in Arsi.
Priest Getnet Aytenew, a prominent Orthodox priest known for his educational content on social media and his commentary on church affairs, was also reportedly arrested. Sources indicate his detention is linked to his writings regarding the massacre of Orthodox Christians in Arsi.
Authorities also detained Priest Dr. Mezgebu Kassa, a respected theologian, researcher, author, and former Chief Executive Officer of EOTC TV. Dr. Mezgebu is known for numerous theological publications, including the book Betré Haymanot and the internationally published Theanthropic Ethics in Conversation with Autonomy and Heteronomy. He is being held at the Federal Police detention center in Mexico Square, Addis Ababa.
In addition, Yeneta Betre Mariam Abebaw, a prominent Orthodox scholar and educator known for making traditional church teachings widely accessible through digital platforms, was arrested in Gonder City. He is the author of several widely circulated works on Orthodox theology, apologetics, and Ge’ez language studies.
The arrests have generated concern among church followers and observers, who note that all four individuals are known primarily for religious teaching, theological scholarship, and public advocacy. Reports from multiple sources suggest that the detentions may be connected to their public statements and writings regarding the killings, destruction of churches, and humanitarian crisis affecting Orthodox Christian communities in East Arsi Zone.
The wave of arrests comes amid growing criticism of the government’s response to the violence, with local sources alleging that survivors remain trapped in affected areas while humanitarian assistance faces significant obstacles in reaching displaced and wounded civilians.
An Urgent Call for International Attention to the Existential Threat Facing the Amhara People
👉 To International Election Observers and Diplomatic Institutions
👉 To International Human Rights Organizations and Relevant Observers
The Amhara people are currently facing an unprecedented existential threat. This letter is written to alert the international community to the humanitarian crisis, mass killings, displacement, and systematic attacks occurring in Ethiopia, particularly in the Amhara region, and to call for immediate international intervention.
Amhara civilians are being targeted and killed based on their ethnic identity. These actions are not merely human rights violations; they constitute acts that may amount to genocide under international law. Millions of Amhara people have been displaced from their homes and are now living in extreme poverty and suffering, both as internally displaced persons and as refugees.
In addition to the destruction of economic and social foundations, schools, healthcare facilities, and other critical infrastructure in the region are being devastated, leaving civilians without essential services and exposed to severe hardship. We call upon international observers to establish independent investigations and exert meaningful diplomatic pressure to address these atrocities.
We demand the immediate establishment of an independent international monitoring and investigation team to examine the war crimes and alleged acts of genocide being committed in the Amhara region. We also call for urgent humanitarian assistance for displaced communities and those living under extreme distress.
While the Amhara people continue to raise their voices day and night, both domestically and internationally, the Prosperity Party government is moving forward with what many perceive to be a sham election under conditions of war and repression. Therefore, we urge the international community to pressure the Ethiopian government to end the systematic attacks against the Amhara people and uphold the rule of law.
The Amhara people seek only peace, equality, justice, and the protection of their fundamental rights as citizens. Silence or delayed action from the international community will only deepen the suffering of innocent civilians. We respectfully urge international institutions committed to justice and humanity to take timely and meaningful action and not ignore this grave situation.
The Amhara people fully reject any “election” conducted under the current state of war, where the safety of citizens is not guaranteed and fundamental rights are widely violated. This letter is intended to inform international observers that an election held in the midst of armed conflict cannot genuinely reflect the will of the people.
While civilians live under the constant threat of war, mass arrests, and physical violence, a free and fair election is impossible. Opposition parties and independent political actors cannot operate freely within the conflict zone. Such an election serves only the interests of those in power and lacks meaningful public participation.
In war-affected areas, polling stations, election officials, and the handling of electoral results remain under the influence and control of executive authorities, undermining the legitimacy of the entire electoral process. Accepting an election conducted during wartime as a “democratic process” risks granting illegitimate recognition to those in power.
An election held without peace, without the rule of law, and without the security of citizens is merely a tool of oppression disguised as democracy. We therefore call upon the international community not to recognize this process as a legitimate election and to condemn the electoral process taking place amid war and humanitarian crisis.

#A_new_promise_beyond_perseverance_to_Ethiopia’s_mothers
#Mother's_Day
In this world our family relationships can be explained by an old saying used by our forefathers “fatherhood is faith and motherhood is truth.” As it is known our country Ethiopia personified as a mother also represents truth, she is our mother, our honor, our partner, our child and ultimately our eternal refuge.
Yesterday our mothers tied their fabric waist-bands, swallowed their sorrow and endured suffrage sending their children to the frontlines to face oppressive invaders both from outside and inside to safeguard our country and ensure she would live on, as documented in history through the heroism of her children.
Today the genocidal Abiy Ahmed regime in order to destroy this country preserved in honor is taking children from their mothers’ side and sending them to the war front. All the while mothers who sent their children to university have spent years waiting for their return, and eyes who became exhausted from smoke and hardship are now in tears. The Prosperity Party regime which set out to eliminate the Amhara people while destroying our motherland has been the reason countless mothers have shed tears. Fano are fighting now to stop these tears. I am saddened for all the mothers of Ethiopia who have lost their children in this fighting. To our precious mothers and especially those of the brave generation who love their country, just as our motherland Ethiopia was preserved by you and mothers like you, today your children will be saved from incarceration and orphanhood by Fano. Because the tears of our mothers have flown through each and every river, we your children have vowed to pay with our blood and bones to preserve this country.
I believe the sacred connection between mother and child begins at the very beginning with the mother. In Ethiopia, mothers are the soul of the household and the heartbeat of our motherland. In our tradition there is an old proverb which says -- “neither mother or land can be replaced.”
You the children of your mothers we view perseverance as a substitute for justice and that is why we persevere in our struggle. We were forced to enter a war we did not choose but we still hold a duty to endure and prevail over it. We cannot honor our motherland without honoring the mothers who support her.
It is necessary to change our sincere gratitude beyond poetic feeling into a tangible political promise. As an emissary of peace: as prime victims of war mothers will be prime architects in future peace building processes.
“Amhara Mothers” '
You deserve respect beyond words. Your fortitude cannot be measured by your suffrage, in fact your unwavering identity is a star which illuminates the darkness. The perils of today will end, you will see the fruits of your labor, and we are certain the day millions of mothers will smile is not far away. We will create a society which will lift the burdens you carry.
Honoring all mothers

🚨 Amhara Fano Accuses Ethiopia of Genocide, Demands AU Intervention
The Amhara Fano National Movement has formally petitioned the African Union to intervene in an ongoing genocide as the 39th AU Summit concludes today in Addis Ababa.
🌍 WHY IT MATTERS NOW
📍 Proximity of Violence: Reports indicate over 100 civilians were killed just 80km from the AU headquarters this past week, challenging the assembly’s silence.
⚖️ Call for Accountability: The Fano leadership is demanding an independent, international fact-finding mission to investigate war crimes and systemic sexual violence.
⚠️ Regional Stability: Allegations suggest the Ethiopian regime is using "diversionary foreign policy" to destabilise Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea to mask internal collapse.
📈 BY THE NUMBERS
🗓️ Duration: The conflict is now entering its 3rd year (commenced 2023).
📉 Impact: Millions (m) displaced with a total breakdown of health and education systems in the Amhara region.
🔍 THE BIG PICTURE
As African leaders convene, the Fano movement describes a nation in fragment. While the federal government projects an image of stability in the capital, the Amhara people report a campaign of "indiscriminate bombardment" and "terrorisation." The movement asserts that the Abiy Ahmed administration has lost control of the majority of the territory and is now leveraging "unholy alliances" with foreign actors to maintain power at the cost of regional peace.
🛡️ KEY DEMANDS FOR THE AU
✅ Agenda Priority: Include the Amhara genocide in the summit’s formal peace and security deliberations.
✅ Humanitarian Access: Urge international communities to bypass federal blockades to reach millions (m) in need.
✅ Political Transition: Support the creation of an inclusive democratic transitional government to replace the current regime.
Fano Denies Involvement in Viral Amhara Assault Video, Calls for Independent Probe
Ethiopian militia group Fano has denied involvement in a widely circulated video showing a young man’s hand being severed with an axe in the Amhara region, urging an independent investigation into the incident that has sparked outrage across the country.
The footage, recorded this week in Woreilu district in South Wollo, shows a man forcing the victim’s hand onto a rock before striking it with an axe. The graphic video spread rapidly on Ethiopian social media platforms, prompting accusations and counter-accusations over who was responsible.
Pro-government activists initially suggested the attacker was linked to Fano, which has been fighting federal forces in Amhara for more than two years. However, photographs later shared online by pro-Fano accounts claimed the assailant had previously surrendered to Ethiopian government forces and was posing as a Fano member.
One of the images circulating on social media appears to show the alleged attacker sitting beside a senior Ethiopian National Defence Force commander. The government has not publicly commented on the allegations, and Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the photographs.
In a statement, the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) condemned the assault, calling it “a shameful act that should never have occurred,” and said it had no involvement in the incident. The group accused federal intelligence services of staging the attack to discredit Fano and erode its local support base.
AFNF said it had “consistently demonstrated commitment to international law,” adding that the video was part of what it described as an ongoing “character assassination campaign.”
The group called on the international community to denounce the attack and urged the formation of an independent body to investigate the incident.
Ethiopia has seen heightened tensions in the Amhara region since mid-2023, with clashes between Fano fighters and government troops continuing despite repeated calls for de-escalation.
