New paper in Current Biology! Led by Maria Antonietta Tosches lab @Columbia. Happy we could be part of this beautiful work.
Cajal–Retzius cells are not just a mammalian innovation - they trace back to an ancient Tp73⁺ neuron family across vertebrates.

Last week , Caghan Kizil, Ph.D., from Columbia University Irving Medical Center, presented an engaging seminar on “Fibronectin as a Proximal Mediator of APOE-ε4-induced Blood-Brain Barrier Dysfunction in Alzheimer’s Disease.” See flyer here > https://t.co/zCxiv7JRAu
2024 was an incredible year for #KizilLab! 🎉
✨ Many publications, 🏆 awards, 💡 innovations & patents! We are proud of our team!
Thanks to collaborators, supporters, and @ColumbiaMed for making it all possible.
Here's to 2025! #ScienceForAll

🔑Highlights:
- Pacemaker-like neurons in the IcNS, generating rhythmic activity autonomously 🧠💓
- A complex diversity of neurotransmitter systems finely tuning heart rhythms 🔬
- Ex-vivo study of intact neural heart networks 🧪
Why it matters: This research challenges the idea that the heart is just a simple relay, positioning the IcNS as a key player in rhythm generation. A leap toward new therapeutic strategies for arrhythmia and heart failure.
This collaborative effort from teams at @karolinskainst and @Columbia@ColumbiaMed, led by @AmpatzisLab and @KizilLab, showcases the power of teamwork.
Congratulations to all authors, including the first authors Andrea Pedroni and @gaattagca! 🙌 This work wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our funding agencies; thank you! 🙏
🚨 Our new study "Decoding the molecular, cellular, and functional heterogeneity of zebrafish intracardiac nervous system" out in @NatureComms! 🌟
We identify the "little brain" of the heart: the intricate intracardiac nervous system (IcNS) of zebrafish! 🐟 Learn more here about how this changes what we know about heart functionality.

Excited to share @AmpatzisLab and @KizilLab's's new paper on #zebrafish 's intracardiac nervous system (IcNS), highlighting the presence of pacemaker-like neurons that partake in heart rhythm—linking cardiac and neuroscience research. https://t.co/n2OhC1kxrT
We're excited to share our new study on the role of the ABCA7 gene in brain resilience against #Alzheimer’s. Published in @CellGenomics, we found that ABCA7 is crucial for maintaining synaptic health by regulating #neuropeptide Y (NPY), a key molecule for brain communication and repair. Loss of ABCA7 reduces NPY, weakening the brain's defenses against AD.
By combining #zebrafish models, human datasets, and #patient-derived iPSCs, we discovered that ABCA7 variants impact synaptic integrity and brain function. Our study also highlights how Alzheimer mechanisms mechanisms vary across different ethnicities. Understanding ABCA7's role in diverse populations can help develop more targeted and effective treatments. By targeting #ABCA7 and boosting NPY signaling, future therapies could offer better protection against AD, giving us hope for new treatment strategies.

Multi-target drugs for Alzheimer's disease
"Traditional therapies aimed at single targets have fallen short owing to the complex, multifactorial nature of #Alzheimer's disease that necessitates simultaneous targeting of various #disease mechanisms for #clinical success. Therefore, targeting multiple pathologies at the same time could provide a synergistic #therapeutic effect."
