Very festive day at @MUMC_GI 🥳
Our very own @IBS_Maastricht has given his inaugural lecture: “A knot 🧶 in the stomach: the unravelment” #IBS#DGBI
We congratulate Professor Daniel Keszthelyi with this amazing milestone! #GItwitter
Peppermint 🌿oil might not be the magic bullet for #IBS. But it is a worthwhile initial step in sx management & appears to be cost-effective.
The 2021 @BritSocGastro & @AmCollegeGastro guidelines both recommend its use, though the recommendation is weak.

Experience Sampling Method allows insight into the impact of #stress 😩on symptoms of functional #dyspepsia: concurrent & preceding stress were positively associated with feelings of fullness.

The feeling of #hunger is driven by the hormone motilin. While #satiation (what you feel right after a meal) is related to the gastric accommodation reflex.
Jan Tack et al. from @TARGID_KULEUVEN explain further in this excellent review in @UEGJournal

Satiation or #satiety - What is the difference?
Satiation occurs during #eating and brings it to an end. Satiety starts after the end of eating and prevents further eating.
@KlaassenT and I believe this distinction is clinically relevant.

Contrary to #IBS, there is actually no proper lay term to describe functional dyspepsia (at least not in Dutch). Makes it much more difficult to explain to patients they have this when they've actually never heard of it.

SRMA performed by our @KlaassenT on the potential role for 'tastants' that stimulate taste receptors but contain no calories shows:
#Bitter tastants (think tonic water) appear most potent in terms of ⬇️ energy intake.
A bitter pill against #obesity?
