One scary inevitability when SGE is released to the public, and as the world shifts more towards using AI tools to answer questions, is that SEO will evolve from simply influencing which websites appear, to also influencing which answers appear.

SEO will become more about controlling the narrative.

As I said in one of my SGE presentations last year, "is promoting consistent and reliable answers for AI the new linkbuilding?"

The past year+ that many of us have been demoing the beta version of SGE has revealed that so far, at least, it's not very difficult to affect what SGE says about someone or something. Especially for lower competition keywords (questions about individuals or specific questions about companies/brands).

I created a test using a number of random questions about me that I can now get SGE to display pretty consistently. It wasn't hard.

(It also works with ChatGPT, Perplexity and other tools, although it sometimes takes a little finagling).

I imagine that future SEOs will be tasked with "make sure SGE doesn't say that" or "make sure SGE says this." It's a new form of reputation management, digital PR, even PR crisis management.
