Ambedkar, the Single Lion

The Nehru Report, published before the Round Table Conference in 1929, completely rejected any kind of representation to depressed classes. Ambedkar read this and realized that Congress would never accept depressed class claims.

A couple of months before the first round table conference.

Gandhi calls the Muslim and Sikh leaders and conveys that Congress would accept the separate electorate claim for Muslims and Sikhs alone. He completely rejects any kind of reservation or separate electorate for depressed classes( Dalits).

Since there was a general consensus, Gandhi decided not to attend the first-round table conference.

Ambedkar was the sole representative of the depressed classes at the Round Table Conference.

Congress and Gandhi thought that what one Ambedkar can do...

When Ambedkar landed in London, he had his own plans.

He gave an interview to the New York Times on the problem of untouchables, and in no time, he was an international celebrity. His thoughts attracted even the best of minds, like Winston Churchill.

On the day of the Round Table Conference, Congress thought it was a done deal.

Then Ambedkar stood up and presented his claims about minority communities, which included the depressed classes, Muslims, and Sikhs. This shocked Congress, since they thought that their game plan of dividing Muslims, Sikhs, and depressed classes did not work.

Ambedkar had check mated the Congress Game Plan, and in his famous representation at the round table conference, he presented a Memorandum called “Claims of Minority Communities”.

The original memorandum is attached for everyone’s benefit. This is a milestone memorandum that eventually led to reservations given to the political, educational, and public employment spaces.

Ambedkar, the Single Lion, led a herd of sheep to Victory in the First Round Table Conference.

One Ambedkar shook a mammooth organization, Congress, led by Gandhi.
