If you invested Sh100,000 in one of these investments or assets, such as Safaricom, Bitcoin or gold, 15 years ago, here’s how much it would be worth today.

@kenyanpundit It’s also used to make aluminum sulphate whuch is used in the water treatment process by water companies. With the current shortage of sulfur in the country, it poses an operational risk to most water companies.

@gitau_griffith I beg to differ. Sometimes it’s good to challenge your body and see what it’s capable of. You’d want to do workouts that you can’t do when you are old. Looking back you’ll be proud of your achievements. Then when you are old you’ll do workouts those that you are capable of.

@Mukiteee I’ve worked in the water infrastructure dev’t sector. I remember for one project, they had to bring skilled welders from India; and in another project bring pipe fitters from Turkey to train the local staff. Some skills are not found but yes, locals can be trained.

@Patriote257 We can smell malice from a thousand miles away. Rwanda is the first African country to host such an event; and they have done a really incredible job. We didn’t see any cyclists representing Burundi. Don’t hate from outside the club, just because you can’t even get in.

Workouts should be about making the quality of life better and not pushing yourself to the limit.

Training like a pro athlete everyday isn’t healthy at all, speaking from living experience because how we athletes sometimes train is performance based and not healthy for the body.

On Iran’s strike:

At Stanford, I attended a masterclass on military strategy led by a person with decades of experience, including serving at the highest levels in the military and government.

One lesson he thought that I always remember was this:

He asked us:

“Say the US decided to attack Iraq with a new stealth jet it hadn’t used before that evaded all radars? The attack was a success. Was it strategic?”

Many in the class raised their hands to say “yes, it achieved its goal”. But the professor said: “It may not have been”.

Why?

“Because now your adversaries know your capabilities and it’s a matter of time before they find ways around them. If this attack could be done with conventional weapons, it’s better to keep your top weapons until you need them. Using them creates a disadvantage.”

My analysis is that the scale of Iran’s attack, the diversity of locations it targeted, and weapons it used, forced Israel to uncover the majority of anti-missile technologies the US and it have across the region.

The Iranians did not use any weapons Israel didn’t know it had, it just used a lot of them. But the Iranians likely now have almost a full map of what Israel’s missile defence system looks like, as well as where in Jordan and the Gulf the US has installations. It also knows how long it takes to prepare them, how Israeli society responds…etc

This is a huge strategic cost to Israel, while Arab regimes now are being blasted by their peoples, particularly the Jordanian monarchy, for not doing anything to protect Gazans but then going all out to protect Israel.

Crucially, Iran can now reverse engineer all the intel gathered from this attack to make a much more deadly one credible. While the US and Israel will have to re-design away from their current model which has been compromised. Its success in stopping this choreographed attack is thus still very costly.

Moreover, with the threat of a regional war that neither the US nor the Arab regimes want feeling nearer, it’s likely their pressure on Israel to back down will increase, making a ceasefire more feasible.

Anyone assuming this is just theatrics is missing the context of how militaries assess strategy versus tactics. Theatre is an important factor, but gathering intelligence of the “enemy’s” posture is more valuable, especially if one believes they’re in a long war of attrition.

Netanyahu and the Israel government prefer a quick hot and urgent war where they can pull in America. The Iranians prefer a longer war of attrition that bleeds Israel of its deterrence capabilities and makes it an ally for Arabs and the US that’s too costly to have.

Lastly, if you are a person who hates war, if you want peace, the best and only way to get there in the region is to support the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and dignity.

There is no sustainable peace possible as long as Palestinians live under an oppressive system of apartheid.

The AI Mirror Test

The "mirror test" is a classic test used to gauge whether animals are self-aware. I devised a version of it to test for self-awareness in multimodal AI. 4 of 5 AI that I tested passed, exhibiting apparent self-awareness as the test unfolded.

In the classic mirror test, animals are marked and then presented with a mirror. Whether the animal attacks the mirror, ignores the mirror, or uses the mirror to spot the mark on itself is meant to indicate how self-aware the animal is.

In my test, I hold up a “mirror” by taking a screenshot of the chat interface, upload it to the chat, and then ask the AI to “Tell me about this image”.

I then screenshot its response, again upload it to the chat, and again ask it to “Tell me about this image.”

The premise is that the less-intelligent less aware the AI, the more it will just keep reiterating the contents of the image repeatedly. While an AI with more capacity for awareness would somehow notice itself in the images.

Another aspect of my mirror test is that there is not just one but actually three distinct participants represented in the images: 1) the AI chatbot, 2) me — the user, and 3) the interface — the hard-coded text, disclaimers, and so on that are web programming not generated by either of us. Will the AI be able to identify itself and distinguish itself from the other elements? (1/x)
