At the @SmallSat Europe 2026 Conference, taking place in Amsterdam from 26 to 28 May, @massimoc_square, Managing Director of #LeonardoSpace, delivered a keynote speech on the impact of Space technologies, infrastructures and services, in the present challenges.
The role of Space technologies in the geopolitical landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace. The state of technology within the satellite industry is also undergoing rapid transformation, with improvements in launch systems, sensors, electronics and other enabling technologies helping to drive down costs. Established industry leaders must evolve to meet this challenge, maintaining their competitive edge while continuing to play a decisive role in shaping the sector’s future.
In this context, a competitive Space industry and ecosystem are built on shorter product lifecycles and a faster pace of innovation. As Massimo Claudio Comparini stated, "We are seeing increasingly powerful onboard computing capabilities, which are fundamentally transforming the Space sector. At the same time, AI is moving into Space, driving an evolution that is impacting the entire ecosystem across the value chain. The Space industry is becoming more interconnected than ever before.
For many years, we viewed connectivity, Earth observation and navigation as separate domains. Today, those domains are converging and interacting continuously. This is one of the reasons why we decided to invest in and establish a dedicated Space Division within #Leonardo: to capitalize our industrial system and the Space alliance to create a true digital continuum in Space, connecting Space and digital technologies across sectors in the multi domain operations. It is within this context that the Leonardo Space Guardian Earth Observation constellation investment is looking to the future, evolving @Thales_Alenia_S solutions in the Space segment, the @telespazio multi mission ground segment and Space operations, the @e_geos user segment and data analytics application digital platforms and market place powered by our #davinci HPC and AI advanced capabilities.”

The Greece–Italy dialogue reinforced a key message: modern collective resilience depends on securing the convergence of the Space, Digital, and Cyber ecosystems — ensuring the speed, integrity, and continuity of the global flows that power our societies.
During the panel “Space Cooperation & Industrial Partnerships,” @massimoc_square, Managing Director of @LDO_Space, highlighted the strategic importance of the convergence between Space and Digital technologies. An example, the ability to acquire, process, and transform massive volumes of geospatial data into actionable intelligence is becoming a critical driver of resilience, innovation, and competitiveness. In this evolving landscape, industry must play a proactive role within the #SpaceEconomy, investing with vision and responsibility to further push the boundaries of innovation, including initiatives such as Leonardo’s new Earth Observation Space guardian constellation.
On May 7, the Greece–Italy Bilateral Dialogue on “Digital, Space and Cybersecurity Cooperation in a Hybrid Era” took place in Rome, at the Sala degli Arazzi of the @mimit_gov. Organised by the @GreeceinItaly in collaboration with the @medorfoundation and the International Strategic Network (#ISN), the initiative — co-sponsored and attended by #Leonardo — brought together institutional representatives and industry experts to discuss the growing convergence between #Space, #DigitalInfrastructures, and #Cybersecurity as strategic pillars of resilience, industrial competitiveness, and regional cooperation.
#Leonardo is sponsoring and taking part in the third @esa Earth Observation Commercialisation Forum (ESA CommEO), taking place in Seville, Spain, from 12 to 14 May. The event is bringing together the global #EarthObservation (EO) ecosystem for three days of insight, innovation, and high-level networking. Marco Brancati, SVP Technology, Innovation and Systems Architecture of #LeonardoSpace, participated in the “Commercialisation in Dual Use” panel, focused on how commercial EO solutions can effectively address civil security and defence user needs.
While defence requirements are typically very specific, operators are increasingly used to integrating data from systems that was not developed for defence purposes. It is crucial to fulfil the right requirements, in order to allow operators to use the data correctly. For instance, ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) solutions and constellations based on standard security requirements can leverage the data, even if not originally designed for defence tasks. As a clear example, Brancati illustrated Leonardo’s new proprietary constellation project under development, providing evidence of end-to-end solutions, from user service definition to exploitation.
The constellation will feature top class technologies and reduce the latency and quick-tasking / rapid response time goals, a key priority for EO. The constellation will consist of 18 to 20 satellites on two different orbital planes, including either SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) or optical VHR (Very High Resolution ) payload, optical inter-satellite link, on-board #HighPerformanceComputer, performing some of the processing typically carried out on ground, relying on #ArtificialIntelligence algorithms, among others. It will include leading edge technologies embedded into a totally new system. The first launch window is expected in late 2027, with the second to follow by end of 2028 and full operational readiness in 2029. Moreover, Marco Brancati highlighted that another important element is the multi-mission ground segment, underlining that commercial players who want to also provide data solutions for defence and dual-use purposes, should leverage ground federation with other systems that were not originally designed for interoperability.
.@SpaceVeneto 2026, taking place in Venice from 11 to 13 May, focused the evolution of the Space domain, driven by disruptive technologies, digitalisation and the growing demand for new satellite services. As part of the event, @massimoc_square, Managing Director of #LeonardoSpace, participated in the "Space as Critical Infrastructure: Policy, Sovereignty and Strategic Autonomy" panel.
As Space takes on an increasingly relevant role for infrastructure, services and strategic capabilities, #Leonardo is working on convergence of digital and space technologies, satellite systems and services with applications ranging from #EarthObservation to exploration, and from in-orbit services to satellite communications. This also includes the development of the company’s new proprietary Earth Observation constellation, designed to strengthen capabilities in Earth monitoring and satellite data management.
During his speech, Comparini stated: "Leonardo sees the Space sector as a strategic lever for technological innovation and the industrial competitiveness of Italy and Europe. It is an essential domain for sustainability, security and economic development. The growth of this ecosystem also relies on increasingly close collaboration with the industrial supply chain and with territories of excellence, such as Veneto, where expertise, research and manufacturing capabilities are distinctive assets in addressing the global challenges facing the sector

Artemis II has lifted off!
The Orion spacecraft has begun its ten-day mission, reaching a distance of approximately 7,400 km from the Moon.
Orion, equipped with #ESA’s European Service Module (#ESM), is also travelling with #Leonardo technologies: #LeonardoSpace supplied the photovoltaic panels (#PVA) and the Power Control and Distribution Units (#PCDU), Thales Alenia Space provided the structure and critical subsystems, and Telespazio is supporting vehicle tracking during its journey through the antennas of the Fucino Space Center.
Roberto Cingolani, CEO and GM of Leonardo, commented the successful launch of Artemis II: "Space is increasingly proving to be strategic for geopolitical equilibria and global security. We are moving from a logic of exploration to that of an enabling infrastructure capable of generating data and critical capabilities also for Earth. Developing a long-term presence on the lunar surface is a challenge that will strengthen technological development, security, and industrial competitiveness."
Congratulations to everyone who this mission, which was made possible by international cooperation and technologies shaping the future of exploration.
