Over the last few days, government officials and their supporters have repeatedly claimed that Dr. Mahrang Baloch chose to boycott her trial and refused to defend herself.
This deliberately obscures what actually happened.
On 12 June, the authorities introduced a so-called faceless court system for these proceedings. Under that arrangement, Mahrang and the other accused were expected to face charges carrying life imprisonment without being able to properly communicate with their lawyers, without being able to see the witnesses testifying against them, and without any meaningful public scrutiny of the process.
The public was excluded. Journalists were excluded. Families were excluded.
The accused themselves were denied the ability to effectively confront the case being presented against them.
In response, Mahrang, Sabghatullah Shah Ji, their lawyers, and members of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee publicly objected. For days, they demanded an open trial. They did not ask for special treatment. They did not ask for immunity. They asked to see the evidence. They asked to see the witnesses. They asked for the proceedings to be conducted in a manner consistent with the most basic principles of justice.
They said repeatedly that they were prepared to face every allegation brought against them, but they would not accept a process in which a person could be sentenced to life imprisonment without being afforded the fundamental safeguards of a fair trial.
That position is now being dishonestly recast as a refusal to defend themselves.
It was the opposite.
Mahrang did not refuse a defence. She demanded the right to mount one.
The question is not why she objected to a process in which the accused could not properly communicate with counsel or confront witnesses. The question is why those conditions were imposed in the first place.
A state confident in its evidence does not need to hide its proceedings from public view. It does not need a system in which the accused, their lawyers, journalists, and the public are prevented from seeing what is happening inside the courtroom.
Mahrang’s objection was never to being tried.
Her objection was to being denied a fair trial while being told to call it justice.

#EndEnforcedDisappearances
My brother, Dad Shah, was forcibly disappeared by law enforcement agencies (LEAs) on 21 April 2026.
On 22 April, I went to the Karachi Press Club and completed the booking for a press conference. I followed their process, asked only for a small space to speak, to tell the world that my brother is missing — that he matters. Still, I was refused a spot.
The Karachi Press Club has always been our only hope. When we were harassed, threatened, and pushed back by Sindh police for protesting, its gates remained open to us. It was one of the few spaces where our voices were allowed to exist without fear.
Today, even that door feels closed.
This is not just about one person. This is about the shrinking of every space for Baloch voices.
We are not asking for favors. We are asking for our right to be heard.

The sun rose, and people sat down to their breakfasts.
But in our home, my old father sat helpless with us, his daughters.
My mother… she still cannot accept this pain.
for us, there is no “good morning.”
Only waiting. Only silence.

Weeks ago, a staged press conference used an enforcedly disappeared woman, Farzana Zehri, who appeared to be under pressure, linking my name with terrorist activities. At that time when many chose silence, Veengas listened.
This conversation reflects the struggle of Baloch women to create political space, and the harm these baseless allegations cause, not just to individuals, but to all women who dare to participate.
“BYC’s pro-people work will speak , not anti-women or anti-Baloch propaganda by the government.”
It also raises a pressing question: why are human rights bodies and politicians silent in the face of injustice and rising enforced disappearances?

Hakim Majeed Baloch, Dawood Baloch, and Usman Baloch were forcibly disappeared on 2 November 2025. Since that day their families have received no information about their fate. Months have passed and the silence from authorities continues.
This case reflects a wider pattern in Balochistan. Baloch students face systematic targeting. Young people who pursue education and awareness face enforced disappearance. This practice aims to silence knowledge and intimidate an entire generation.
Their families continue to wait for answers. Enforced disappearance is a serious human rights violation under international law. Authorities must end impunity, disclose their whereabouts, and ensure their safe and immediate release.
