Happy to be quoted in today’s the Times on the current mental health crisis: “It’s not about taking away support, it’s about offering the right kind of support”. https://t.co/8TZc86DxKl
This study finds that psychiatrists who worked on DSM-5 received $14M in undisclosed funding from the pharmaceutical industry; the very industry that has profited enormously from DSM's over-medicalisation of everyday life.

There's a big study coming out tomorrow on the effectiveness of antidepressants for anxiety. The press coverage has been organised by the Science Media Center, which has a history of spinning antidepressant findings in the most positive light for the press.. Looking forward to...
This @JamesClear concept has made such a difference in my workouts this year. Sometimes it is just a win to show up!
And the beautiful thing is, it's true in every area of life. Show up because you are a person who shows up, and in time you'll become that kind of person.
My take: The idea that “chemical imbalance” theory *never* served as *the* core rationale for clinical use of antidepressants is simply false, has been repeatedly shown to be false, & anyone still saying so is either misinformed or an ideologue unwilling to give up their shtick.
Thank you Newslab team @malaysiakini for the excellent work you do. I'm glad I bookmarked this. Wanted to confirm #MalaysiaMADANI for #OKUMalaysia#JanjiTinggalJanji 2 years in. Because a certain report excluded us.

The parentified daughter becoming the adult with an autoimmune disease is a missing link in health. A lifetime of carrying everyone else’s burdens will always show up in the body.
This is why I’m a big fan of using the arts as a medium to provoke difficulty conversations about #MentalHealth about #relationships in a way that is accessible to everyone. The old, the young, the unconvinced - don’t argue with them, show them.
Fantastic performance of Emily of Emerald Hill last night for @aboutkuching 2024. Outstanding performance by the OG Pearlly Chua. There were many personally triggering moments throughout the play which I’m going to unpack #MentalHealth: 🧵
Many of us will recognise people we know in the story.I certainly did. I overheard a father telling his son after the show, “Now I see how hard Mama (Grandma)’s life must have been like.” The older gen often say “We suffered more but we grew up fine”. Oh, did you really?
Not going to spoil the story, but that doesn’t work out too well. That’s intergenerational #trauma right there, from adverse childhood experiences (#ACE). Throw in unresolved grief and you’ve got a recipe for toxic parenting and misery cloaked in duty and obligation.
The story weaves through the life of Emily from the 1930s to the 1990s. The setting is Singapore but the themes are universal. Having been abandoned as a young child, Emily strives to make herself indispensable as a wife, mother, in-law to everyone so she can control them.
Two is twice as good as one, but one is infinitely better than zero.
-One minute of making sales calls is infinitely better than zero minutes.
-One minute of meditation is infinitely better than zero minutes.
-One minute of writing is infinitely better than zero minutes.
Sure, it might be ideal to spend an hour doing these things, but one minute gets you in the game. Now you're learning. Now you're improving. Now results are possible. One doesn't seem like much, but it's something real. At zero, you're still dreaming.
The theme for #WMHD 2024 is Mental Health at Work. While EAPs and access to mental health services are vital, a psychologically #safe workplace culture and systemic support are equally—if not more—important. Without this, people are not going to feel safe enough to ask for help.
A living wage is mental health support!
Affordable housing is mental health support!
Equitable healthcare access is mental health support!
Protection from discrimination is mental health support!
Good governance is mental health support!
Excerpt: "The patterns we see in individual therapy are mirrored in the work we do with the community...the same hyper-vigilance and anger and the same detachment...If people are in pain, it flows through their connections and ripples out across their communities.”
“You drown not by falling into a river but by staying submerged in it.” Paulo Coelho. This article does a good job of understanding trauma through a systems lens, and how trauma affects people, both individually and as a group. @SSIReview
