Hello, I’m a Possum.
Probably, you don't know it, but I’m not here to cause any trouble. Actually, I’m here to help. Every night, I can eat lots of ticks, along with insects that spread disease.
I also keep snake numbers in check, even the venomous ones. My body is tough enough to survive Rattlesnake or Coral Snake bites, and yes, I even eat venomous snakes like they’re just another meal.
What’s more, my blood carries something special. Scientists have used it to develop treatments for snake bites that save lives. Without animals like me, there would be more pests, more Snakes, and fewer cures for people.
So if you see me, please don’t hurt me. Let me raise my babies. I’m just out here doing my part to make the world a little safer for everyone.
Commissioner Temple likes to tout “the success” of Florida’s tort reforms.
Here’s the truth ⬇️
Florida’s tort reforms made it where policyholders couldn’t hold insurers accountable, resulting in an epidemic of insurers denying claims.

#BREAKING: Florida House Speaker @Daniel_PerezFL scorches property insurance companies, vows subpoenas and hearings will be underway over "accounting tricks"
"The insurance industry came to the legislature and said without sweeping reforms, companies could not compete in Florida. We have since learned of reports, in existence at the time but not disclosed, that may suggest some insurance companies were using accounting tricks to hide substantial profits while telling us they were in a crisis."
"I have asked that the Insurance and Banking Subcommittee will conduct hearings... issuing subpoenas, putting witnesses under oath, and hiring outsider experts."
"We are the House of Representatives. We are the voice of the people. We must speak for them on the issues that matter. Property insurance matters to the people of Florida."
NEW: While Florida's insurance companies were losing millions, their affiliate companies made billions.
That's according to a 2022 state report never before released:

Tallahassee is a wholly owned subsidiary of the insurance lobby. I'm being booted out of Citizens because a new state law says I have to go w/another company charging 19% more (for windstorm I never have or really can collect)
If it was 20%, I could stay
What a scam
My family moved to South Florida in 1977
Since then, none of our houses ever made a hurricane insurance claim
Yet rates keep rising to fatten insurers' wallets
It's a scam
Florida should socialize windstorm insurance in the same way the feds handle Medicare Advantage
Fla insurance commissioner Michael Yaworsky says he was told recently his homeowners insurance rates were going up 7%. He said “how the hell did this happen and I realized I approved it.” But he maintains market continues to stabilize & carriers like State Farm are growing

This is Zeus. He miraculously survived a tornado that tossed him across his neighborhood in his crate. When it tore through his town in Nebraska last week with maximum wind speeds of 165 miles per hour, Zeus was inside in his kennel. The sudden cyclone completely flattened their home, but Zeus' crate was found four blocks away with a broken door, and he was found two blocks away patiently waiting on a mattress for help. Rescuers believe the crate saved his life. The pup, who ironically shares a name with the Greek god of the sky, sustained only minor injuries: a scrape on his nose, a few torn toenails, and a sore hind leg. He's recuperating at a local boarding facility free of charge while his family works to rebuild their home. His caretakers say he's in great spirits despite everything he's been through. 14/10
NEW: A long-awaited report on how lawsuits are driving Florida's insurance crisis is mixed.
Yes, there are signs of lawsuit fraud in South Florida.
But there are also indications that insurers' bad behavior drove lawsuits.
