Nope. Both protests were/are different and one must point out how and why. Jantar Mantar protest was an afterthought where they jumped on student issues, especially NEET. That's why their demands were political like resignation and compensation. To the contrary, Jharkhand students have set demands that directly addresses their grievance and its genesis was always in student issues.

Just as I was about to leave, the shopkeeper stopped me and made me pay another 40, saying I had to bear the credit card charges.

From a “Why Not?” to “Who else?” supporter of the Prime Minister.

For the last few months, I have been wondering whether time is the biggest enemy of any anyone? Or is it the bureaucracy in India that has the eternal power to withstand any change and ensure that every leader ends up we he started, if not at worse. The euphoria of 2014 & 2019 have been long gone. We made peace with that. But is this the government we voted for in 2014,2019 & 2024?

While I may not have the answers as yet, but I know one thing for sure. I have shifted from a “Why Not?” supporter of the Prime Minister to “Who else?” supporter.

For the usual suspects, no, it was not the UGC Guidelines that pushed me. I had read the draft carefully and there was nothing much to outrage about it. It simply rephrased the already existing guidelines and was merely a case of incompetent drafting. The Ajeet Bhartis and Sanjay Dixits are serial outragers who make money by outraging. I don’t take them seriously, neither should you. It is not the US Trade deal, or the purported abandonment of Russia or reengagement with China. These are issues above my pay grade.

What has made me cynical about Prime Minister Modi’s ability to lead is the arrogance, indifference and at times, shamelessness that is characterising the BJP and its governments’ response to issues. We saw how the government responded in Noida when a techie fell into the waterlogged plot or in Delhi, when a biker fell into the ditch at a work site. As someone who always believed that this government listens, I expected swift actions, mission mode rectifications and more than anything, a government that listened. It didn’t. We were met with usual committees, transfers and arrogant responses by the political functionaries. Half the state of UP was grappling with frequent power cuts and on being asked, the Centre’s blue-eyed boy Mr. A K Sharma responded with chants of Jai Shree Ram as if our King/god was a refuge for his incompetence. We all saw how Kailash Vijayvargiya responded to the Indore tragedy. No one has done more damage to the sanity within the BJP than Nishikant Dubey. His hypocrisy, crassness and senselessness should be a case study.
I remember in 2014 to 2019, we heard the rustic and grounded speeches of Hukumdev Narayan Singh Yadav, nuanced and carefully chosen words of Arun Jaitley and well-researched and curated speeches of PM Modi. We could see the intention. We saw a man who said that the buck stops with him. We were happy to give credit to him for wins because he took difficult decisions and frankly, big decisions. Now, all we see is a personality who is happy to be defended by clowns like Nishikant Dubey and his kind. He isn’t talking to us anymore. He is talking to his select few. He is surrounded by a few unelectables (or maybe electables) who win in his name and have made it their solemn duty to sing his paeans all day long. BJP has become an election machinery run by a select few. It is characterised by rowdy Yuva Netas shamelessly showing their Land Cruisers and Fortuners while the roads in their areas don’t exist and severs are jammed. It is characterised by the son of mayor openly asking “tax” for works to be given to a particular ward. It is characterised by an arrogant and corrupt minister pushing unscientific blending of fuels because he can’t go back on his stupid policy. The government has stopped course correcting. It is doubling down on brute force, indifference and mean electioneering.

It is not listening to us and not talking to us.

जस्टिस प्रशांत कुमार मिश्रा को आप सब तो जानते ही होंगे। अरे वही जिनकी बेंच ने मीनाक्षी नटराजन के केस में पहले नामांकन की प्रक्रिया खत्म होने के बाद सुनवाई की फिर निचली अदालत में चुनाव याचिका के तहत जाने को कहा। खबर यह नहीं है।

खबर यह है कि इनके बेटे पद्मेश मिश्रा को महज पांच साल के अनुभव पर 2024 में राजस्थान का अतिरिक्त एडवोकेट जनरल बना दिया था।
राज्य सरकार की वाद नीति, 2018 के अनुसार, 10 साल का वकालत अनुभव रखने वाले अधिवक्ता को ही एएजी नियुक्त कर सकते हैं, लेकिन राज्य सरकार ने इसमें संशोधन कर विशेषज्ञता के आधार पर किसी भी अधिवक्ता को एएजी बनाने का प्रावधान कर दिया।

इसके तहत ही राज्य सरकार ने वकील के तौर पर 2019 में पंजीकृत पदमेश मिश्रा को 23 अगस्त 2024 को सुप्रीम कोर्ट में सरकार का पैनल एडवोकेट नियुक्त किया। बात यहीं खत्म नहीं हो इसके तीन दिन बाद ही उसे सुप्रीम कोर्ट में राज्य सरकार का एएजी बना दिया दिया। खबर यही खत्म नहीं होती।

यह मामला जब हाईकोर्ट गया और इसके खिलाफ याचिका दाखिल की गई। अदालत ने कहा कि राज्य सरकार की ओर से एएजी पद पर की गई नियुक्ति विधिसम्मत है और लॉ ऑफिसर की नियुक्ति करना राज्य सरकार का प्रशासनिक व वैधानिक अधिकार है।

हाईकोर्ट ने पदमेश मिश्रा की एएजी पद पर नियुक्ति को चुनौती देने वाली याचिका भी खारिज कर दी। अदालत ने कहा कि याचिकाकर्ता किसी भी तरह की राहत प्राप्त करने का अधिकारी नहीं है।

तो अब खबर फिर से पढ़ें कि मीनाक्षी नटराजन को सुप्रीम कोर्ट से राहत नहीं मिली।
