Staking has evolved rapidly since the introduction of the first Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain, Peercoin, in 2012.
​
Each iteration has sought to improve upon existing implementations from a technological perspective. For example, in 2014 Daniel Larimer launched BitShares, the first network to use Delegated Proof of Stake (a variation on PoS) and in 2020, Polkadot launched, utilizing Nominated Proof-of-stake (NPoS).
​
However, recent innovations have not been focused on improvements to the underlying consensus algorithm. Instead, they’ve been geared towards the premise of liquidity and shared security.
​
Let’s dive into the details.
​
Liquid Restaking vs. Liquid Staking
​
Typically, tokens are “staked” to validators that are responsible for participating in the consensus process by validating transactions and proposing blocks, and these tokens are illiquid for the duration of stake.
​
This is an opportunity cost for the user staking tokens, as those tokens can’t be utilized elsewhere (such as in DeFi), simultaneously.
​
That was the case, until the introduction of liquid staking, pioneered by @LidoFinance, which enables users to stake directly on a PoS network and receive a liquid staking token (LST) as a receipt for their staked asset.
​
These LSTs can be freely transferred, traded, or utilized in DeFi similar to the underlying asset, unlocking billions in total value locked (TVL). As a result, users can enjoy the best of both worlds, receiving yield via native staking, as well as additional yield sourced from DeFi activities.
​
@eigencloud introduced the primitive of restaking, in which staked $ETH can be repurposed to provide security to any external service requiring an economic security layer, such as rollups, oracles, bridges etc. dubbed Actively Validated Services (AVSs), in exchange for rewards.
​
In the same way that @ethereum provides native staking, but not liquid restaking, EigenLayer provides restaking, but not liquid restaking.
​
Protocols such as YieldNest enable liquid restaking on top of EigenLayer, greatly increasing capital efficiency for restakers. Additionally, liquid restakers benefit from more rewards since they receive the same native staking yield plus restaking rewards from AVSs.
​
Importance of Restaking and Liquid Restaking
​
EigenLayer is an important innovation as @ethereum is not capable of validating any off-chain transactions, so any module that cannot be deployed or proven on top of the EVM must bootstrap its own validator network.
​
Generally speaking, since any modules middleware dependencies may be the target of attack, the cost of corruption of said module is the minimum cost to corrupt at least one of it’s dependencies. This poses a risk for @ethereum since the cost of corruption for one of these modules is significantly lower than that of @ethereum.
​
Consequently, liquid restaking protocols are not only beneficial for restakers (that benefit from boosted rewards) but also for each AVS that can utilize @ethereum’s security, and @ethereum itself.
​
What is YieldNest?
​
YieldNest is a liquid restaking protocol that prioritizes security of the protocol, user funds, and @ethereum.
​
Each additional AVS that ETH is restaked to increases the risk of slashing of user funds. To combat this risk, we incorporate Isolated AVS verticals (for example, AVSs focusing on artificial intelligence), and baskets of AVSs, which are carefully curated and vetted by the YieldNest DAO.
​
Coupled with independent risk analysis of LRTs and native LRTs (nLRTs), YieldNest ensures superior risk-adjusted returns for your ETH.
​
So why liquid restaking? It’s becoming the next logical step in changing the game on EigenLayer and exporting @ethereum’s security for broader purposes.
