Social media will become more and more a part of our lives sad it begins to take on essential roles in education, health services, and as a community resource. Delivering access to the services provided through social media is something that libraries can help address #INFO246w81
@WunWong4 Yes! The building of an online community is only possible if people interact with each other online, and the library facilitates that through an engaging social media presence. Creating a welcoming online space for communities is just an extension of the physical library.
Metrics of engagement like shares, comments, likes and reach help a library analyze how effective their strategy is and help them hone their social media voice. By looking at the content that does well, libraries can learn how to compellingly speak to their audience. #INFO246w718
@librarianshabs I think this is an important point to bring up as we want the partners we work with to also take privacy seriously. We saw libraries affecting change when LinkedIn Learning began requiring public accounts for users. Many libraries stopped offering it until the terms changed.
For example, my library was recording Driver's License # for extra verification and because "that's what we've always done". Concerns were finally addressed and that data field was purged. It's scary to think about all the info we give and retain b/c that's what we've always done
To help maintain their patron's privacy, libraries should be aware of what kind of information they are retaining and why. They should regularly look at the private data they are retaining and be prepared to remove unnecessarily private information when needed. #INFO246w74
@rebeccasjsu Yes! I agree that each social media platform has its strengths and weaknesses and only by using them differently can they be effective. It seems to be an unfortunate trend that some of our local libraries are missing out on engaging our communities.
Libraries use social media not only to share about library programs and events, but they also share and retweet about important events, resources, and news that is happening in their communities, helping to tie the library closer to the people they serve. #INFO246w620
@jedibrarian Hi Kay! California has so many great natural outdoor sights to see and experience! I sometimes forget what is in my background and available to me until someone asks! Even if you're aren't moving, come and visit the ocean and dip your toes in!
Hi everyone! My name is Elaine and I'm from a small town called Pinole in the SF Bay Area. While a smaller town, we are home to the Point Pinole Regional Shoreline which has some nice trails and picnic spots! Here are some soothing shore sounds to round out your day! #INFO246w66
@INFO246TessC Hi Tess, these sculptures by Nikki de Saint Phalle are really awesome! Definitely a sight to see if I can ever make the trip down to San Diego! Thanks for sharing!
@jedibrarian Hi Kay! Hope you've been able to stay somewhat cool! We've been experiencing a bit of a heat wave in the Bay Area (nothing close to Phoenix temps) but most of us are complaining nevertheless ๐ Like Morgan mentioned, the cool๐ต would probably make the weather more fun at least!
@gaby_mlis I also wonder if they got a better level of engagement with Facebook than they did with Twitter. It's kind of a Catch-22 because if don't post on Twitter, you won't get engagement, but if you need high engagement to make posting on Twitter worth it. . .
@pradobriansjsu I love that LA Public has a dedicated IG in Spanish. It shows that the Spanish speaking community isn't an afterthought for the organization and that they willing to devote the time, money, and staff just as they would for the English speaking community.
@Fabiola_mlis @SFPublicLibrary I agree! Being able to receive timely information about your community from the Library and information professionals. I also imagine it helps to declutter your feed a bit so you don't have follow so many accounts and can just rely on a few you trust.
@JulieMcP43 @PleasantHill_CA It's been an interesting time, especially as I'm only working 2 days at the temp and 3 at another library. Discovering a new community has been a great journey. Have you seen the progress of the new library yet? It's so exciting!
@CReyesReads Yes! Looking forward to it! Glad you enjoy the alliteration. Thinking of a handle always seems to be first big hurdle of jumping into new social!
@Publiclibrary3 Hi Helen! That's amazing that there are so many library options in your area! You must have quite the collection of library cards! We have a great selection of library systems in the Bay, but they are further apart and require much more driving if I want to collect them all.
