News: Coalition says #Abeshige extrajudicial killings ‘comparable to the #Red_Terror’, demands independent investigation

The Coalition for Ethiopian Unity said on Saturday the three men, Temesgen Getachew, Yitagesu Asegidew and Gizaw Girmaye, were targeted on 30 July in Nacha Kulit Kebele, Gurage Zone in Central Ethiopia regional state, after allegedly being accused of being “#Fano.”

The killings were “comparable to the Red Terror” it said, and demanded an independent investigation.

Citing local sources, the coalition said the brother of Yitagesu Asegidew, one of the victims, was "previously seized from Hawassa and executed in a similar manner", which it said indicates that the killings may be targeting families and identity. It also cited the case of Gizachew Girma, another young man who was allegedly arbitrarily executed about a month ago in Darge Kebele, within the same Abeshige Woreda.

For three years, armed conflict in Amhara has cost countless lives. Oromia continues to bleed. Tigray teeters back into open fighting, Afar has been drawn in, and Benishangul-Gumuz remains gripped by violence too.

Enough. I urge the federal government and all regional leaders to choose dialogue over guns, and to pursue real political solutions. War only brings death, destruction, displacement, and deprivation. Ethiopians deserve better.

More than 20 temporary shelters at the "70 Kare" (Seba Kare) Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) center in Tigray were completely destroyed after heavy rain and strong winds struck the site on 04 August, according to the Western Tigray Civil Society Organization (Tsilal).

Speaking to Tigray TV, the center's coordinator, Zebenom Kidu, said the storm left the shelters uninhabitable, caused extensive damage to residents' belongings, and further worsened the already precarious conditions facing displaced families.

Zebenom said several people sustained injuries during the incident, including elderly residents, who were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Describing the situation as an added burden for an already vulnerable population, he appealed to humanitarian organizations to provide immediate emergency assistance to affected residents.

In a statement, Tsilal said the destruction has deepened the humanitarian challenges confronting internally displaced people at the site and stressed that durable solutions remain urgently needed. The organization reiterated that the long-term resolution to the displacement crisis lies in creating conditions that allow displaced residents to return safely and voluntarily to their places of origin.
