On December 5, 2017, the Swiss government announced that it would return $321 million stolen by Sani Abacha, Nigeria’s late military dictator who ruled from 1993 to 1998. The money was part of the billions of dollars allegedly looted during his rule. The repatriation was big news for many who have been following the development since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

But there seemed to be more about this particular $321 million that would now be handled by Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s minister of justice and attorney-general under the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

So this is one of the biggest myths that is killing people.

Alcohol is bad, yes. But it is NOT the only enemy of the liver.

In fact, in this part of the world (Nigeria), Hepatitis B is actually a leading cause of liver cancer.

Now, here’s how a someone who doesn't drink can still get liver cancer:

1. Viral Hepatitis (B & C): This is the silent killer. You can get it from sharing sharps (clippers, needles), unprotected sex, or even from birth (mother to child). It sits in the body for years, quietly destroying the liver until it becomes cancerous.

2. Agbo/ Unregulated Herbal Mixtures: You think you are washing your system or treating pile, but you are feeding your liver unknown chemicals that are toxic to it.

3. Aflatoxins: Eating moldy foods like groundnuts, corn, or dried fish. That mold produces a poison called Aflatoxin which is a direct cause of liver cancer.

4. Fatty Liver: Being overweight or having uncontrolled diabetes can cause fat to build up in the liver, leading to damage similar to what alcohol does.

So yes, not only alcoholics get liver cancer. Anyone with the above can too.

That's why we always advocate to get tested.
