#Gifaataa, the New Year festival of the #Wolaita people, has been added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, according to an announcement by UNESCO.

The decision was approved during a session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held this week in India.

Gifaataa, celebrated annually between mid-September and early October, marks the beginning of the new year for the Wolaita community. In the days leading up to the festival, families clean their homes and surroundings, reconcile disputes, and return to their villages to observe the holiday together.

The main day of Gifaataa is marked by family gatherings, the sharing of raw meat and local beer, and blessings offered by elders. Evening rituals take place around bonfires, accompanied by traditional singing and dancing. The ten-day celebration concludes with goolo-igetta, a large communal event featuring horse riding, music and final blessings.

The festival is also characterized by distinct gender and age roles. Girls support their mothers in preparing traditional foods, brewing drinks and decorating homes, while boys assist their fathers with gathering firewood, repairing houses and preparing bonfires. Elders foster social harmony by resolving disputes, advising on farming practices and offering blessings.

According to UNESCO, the knowledge and practices of Gifaataa are passed down within families and reinforced through schools, cultural institutions and local media. The festival promotes intergenerational connection, peace, unity and social solidarity, and also serves as an occasion for young people to meet potential marriage partners.
