Enough Is Enough. Free Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
For far too long, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has remained in detention under circumstances that raise serious questions about respect for due process and the rule of law. In a constitutional democracy, no citizen should be held indefinitely without clear charges before a competent court. Nigeria’s institutions were established to uphold justice, not to weaken it through silence, delay, or procedural ambiguity. What we are witnessing is not just a legal matter involving one individual; it is a test of the strength and credibility of our democratic institutions.
Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s record in public service is well known. As governor of Kaduna State, he pursued difficult reforms aimed at modernizing governance, strengthening education, improving infrastructure, and promoting fiscal discipline. These policies were not always easy, but they reflected a leadership style that prioritized long-term progress over short-term popularity. Today, the continued detention of a public figure with such a record naturally raises concern among citizens who believe in fairness, accountability, and equal treatment under the law.
This moment therefore demands clarity and adherence to legal standards. If there are credible allegations, they should be presented openly before a court so that the judicial process can determine the facts. If not, continued detention serves no purpose other than to erode public confidence in the system meant to protect justice. Institutions such as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission must demonstrate through their actions that the rule of law remains the guiding principle of their mandate.
Across Nigeria, many citizens are calling for transparency and fairness in the handling of this matter. Their message is simple: justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done. The path forward is clear; respect due process, uphold the law, and ensure that Mallam El-Rufai’s rights as a citizen are fully protected.
Nigeria deserves institutions that act with integrity.
