MakSPH and STI-OP Discuss Priorities for Research Translation

@Makerere University School of Public Health and the Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat in the Office of the President (STI-OP) today discussed priorities for moving public health research into policy, programmes and scalable solutions during a visit by Hon. Eng. @EngJonard.

Accompanied by University Management led by Vice-Chancellor @ProfNawangwe, the Minister met researchers whose work spans health data systems, disease surveillance, climate and environmental health, infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and non-communicable diseases. Their presentations showed how MakSPH research has informed policy, strengthened national programmes and generated solutions with potential for wider use.

The Minister also toured the new MakSPH building, which is nearing completion.

🚨 ROAD SAFETY ALERT
As our children return to school and many families travel across the country, roads are expected to be busier than usual. This comes at a time when many people will also be travelling to Toro for the burial of the Omukama of Tooro.
We therefore urge all road users to plan their journeys, leave early, avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking and never drive under the influence of alcohol or while fatigued.
#Parents & #drivers: Your child’s safety is more important than arriving early.
#Drivers: Do not drive as if you own the road; drive as if you own the car and everyone’s life in it.
Let us exercise patience, discipline and courtesy on the roads. A journey is successful only when you arrive safely.

MakSPH-CTRIAD Newsletter Highlights Progress in Drowning Prevention and Road Safety

@Makerere University School of Public Health's @TRIADUnit released its January-June 2026 newsletter, highlighting progress in injury prevention research, capacity building, and policy engagement.

The edition captures the Centre’s work to strengthen drowning prevention and road safety through partnerships with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit; support to Village Health Teams in Mayuge and Ntungamo to improve community reporting of drowning incidents through eCHIS; and training for 30 journalists from more than 10 media houses in the Albertine region on accurate, evidence-informed road-safety reporting.

It also features research dissemination, stakeholder engagement, and the people advancing CTRIAD’s mission for safer communities.

Words cannot express the grief of waking up, wishing your family a good day, and never making it back home. The crash that happened yesterday at Nkoowe, Kampala-Hoima Rd, was tragic indeed, we grieve with the families. The conversation on road safety cannot be emphasized enough!

2 people have been confirmed dead & 09 others injured following a fatal crash that occurred today, 8 Sept 2026, at around 01:33pm at Nkoowe along the Kampala–Hoima Road in Wakiso District.
The crash involved 4 vehicles: UBK 495F Sino Truck, UAT 272J T/Hiace, UBB 353D Subaru Forester and UBE 918T Toyota Wish.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Sino truck, which was carrying stones traveling from Kakiri towards Kampala, lost control while at Nkoowe & rammed into the 3 vehicles, including a commuter taxi that had stopped to load passengers.
As a result, 2 people identified as the driver & conductor of the commuter taxi died on the spot.
09 passengers in the commuter taxi were injured, comprising 05 adults & 04 juveniles.

⚡️ Even great interventions fail if systems & communities aren't ready to sustain them.
