Here a mother elephant with twine, as seen in Corbett.
Twins in elephants are not just rare; they are a fascinating lesson in population dynamics.
In ecology, scientists often describe species using two reproductive strategies: r-selected and K-selected. These terms come from population growth equations.
“r” represents the intrinsic rate of population growth - how fast a species can multiply.
“K” represents the carrying capacity of an ecosystem - the maximum population that the environment can sustainably support.
Species that follow the r-strategy focus on rapid multiplication. They produce many offspring because survival chances are low. Think of insects, frogs or many fish. Their formula is simple: more babies = better chance that some survive.
Elephants belong to the opposite category; K-selected species. These animals live near the carrying capacity (K) of their habitat, so competition for resources is high. Instead of producing many young, they invest heavily in very few.
For elephants:
Pregnancy lasts nearly 22 months
Usually only one calf is born
Mothers and herds spend years protecting and raising that calf
Population growth is naturally slow
That is why twins in elephants are so extraordinary. In a species evolutionarily designed for “few offspring, high investment,” producing two calves at once is almost an exception to the rule.
In r-selected animals, twins or multiple young are common.
In elephants, even one calf is a major biological investment. Two together become a remarkable event in the story of life history and population dynamics.
The same Brahman, the Supreme Reality, pervades every particle of creation. The sky, earth, fire, water and air; the trees, plants, animals, birds and human beings all are diverse expressions of that one Divine Consciousness. With this vision, the highest purpose of life is to cultivate oneness, harmony and co-existence with the whole of creation, for we all belong to the same Supreme Source. This sacred understanding inspires us to treat nature and every living being around us with reverence, compassion and love, knowing that the same Divine dwells in all.

If you’re someone who casually throws trash out of your car window, then don’t even think of visiting Sikkim.
But if this clip makes you smile, then packing your bags and heading there may be one of the best travel decisions you’ll ever make.
Because I think what makes Sikkim a truly beautiful destination isn’t just the landscape. It’s the mindset of its people.

“Despite the enormous quantity of books, how few people read! And if one reads profitably, one would realize how much stupid stuff the vulgar herd is content to swallow every day.”
There is a singular pride in watching a young person grow, but there is something deeply moving about watching a protege exceed even the high hopes you held for them. This past Sunday, as I looked out at the graduating class at the Fletcher School, my eyes kept returning to one face in particular: @ArmaanMathur, now officially a Master of Arts in Law & Diplomacy.
I first encountered Armaan when he was a high school student, sending an email filled with a rare earnestness and a sharp, inquisitive mind for international affairs. He had his heart set on St. Stephen’s, my own alma mater, and while the cruel mathematics of admissions cutoffs meant he didn't secure his spot there, I told him then what I believe now: Make them regret it.
He took that challenge to heart. At @Hansraj_College, Armaan didn’t just succeed; he flourished — excelling in the classroom, leading student societies, and proving his mettle on the cricket pitch. When he joined me as an intern, our correspondence shifted from advice to a genuine intellectual partnership. His reflective emails and deep insights into the world made it clear to me that he was a scholar of the highest calibre, as well as a genuinely likeable human being.
When he looked toward graduate studies, I knew exactly where he belonged. I was thrilled to support his application to my alma mater, the @FletcherSchool. And this time, the doors swung wide. He didn't just attend; he conquered. He secured a fellowship, maintained straight As, represented the school on the national & world stage, and ultimately achieved something that touches me more than I can adequately express: he became the Editor-in-Chief of the @FletcherForum of World Affairs.
In 1975, I helped found that journal and chaired its editorial board. To stand there a half-century later, serving as the Commencement Speaker for his class, and to watch Armaan take up the mantle of that very journal was a moment of pure, overwhelming gratitude. A journey that has, for me, come full circle.
Armaan, you have been a constant source of inspiration. You are a brilliant scholar, a leader of integrity, and a true inheritor of the work that has defined so much of my own life. Watching you accept your degree and standing alongside your parents after you did so was the highlight of my year, and I cannot wait to see how you change the world.
Congratulations, Armaan. The future is yours.
To her students, Dr. Meenu is more than a professor — she is a mentor, a guide, and a campus mom far away from home. ❤️
So when her students requested a dance performance, she happily said yes.
Blending grace, culture, and joy, she reminded everyone that health is not just about fitness, but also about happiness, connection, and staying true to your roots.
And as she twirled with a smile on her face and fire in her spirit, she proved something beautiful — age is never a limit when the heart is young, the soul carries rhythm, and the passion to inspire others never fades. ✨
