@DaveThroup Thanks for the update. I drove past that today when the temporary lights are up. Pretty sure it will be closed as it continues to rain and the instability continues.
@DaveThroup After 30 years of measuring rainfall I have been able to see a change in the pattern of rain. There is a marked increase in intensity, and therefore the impact, of rain. The overall amount may not change but if 50mm falls in 3 hours, and not 2 days, the impacts are magnified.
@DaveThroup@JamesOBrienDCU The difference being a that they reclaimed a lot of agricultural land, where they had none before. Low lying land in the UK was fertile, partly because of winter floods depositing nutrients on flood plains, but building in floodplain, often against advice, has created problems.
@DaveThroup My garden (one of 3 springs) got to this with the last 2 weeks of rain. However is has a sown the accumulation of the rain since October to get back to this level. Bit of a lead time for us to prepare!
@squeezyjohn It’s called convective rain. You know it’s going to rain, but you really don’t know where until the storm cell develops. Then you get a bit better on the direction of travel but the duration is more of an unknown.
More energy in the system gives more of this type of weather.
@nedboulting listening the pod and heard @millarmind use the portmanteaux word fubarred. I use that as a description of a metamorphic rock (mylonite) that had been highly squeezed and stretched. I thought that delightful word was more appropriate in geology and now bike racing
@SportsOrla They fine a rider for a kiss, but no action if you are clearly discombobulated in charge of a bike. UCI are their own worst enemies at times. Concussion protocols should be enforced and then allowed to make up time if cleared for take off? Too reasonable I fear.
@pippa_york @chrisloder At best a dog whistle at worst knowingly putting vulnerable young people even more at risk whilst removing any chance of help. Fortunately we have a ballot box available next week.
@DaveThroup From a professional whose job it is to look after those very weather stations, part of the continuous data requirements is to have the same exposure to the elements measured within set parameters which are checked regularly over the whole period of record. But why check?
@ronnnie_12trans @pippa_york Actually people like those in the picture were doing the same things, but in the background. They have now become emboldened and have amplified their increasingly damaging work on the back of a populist movement. All it does is put the most vulnerable more vulnerable. 🤦♂️
@Debbie_Tann They are playing politics with the environment. No evidence, or science, on any topic can override a pressing short term political interest. It is our job to hold them to account and not vote for them. That’s the polite response.
@RadWagon The business model is geared to make a guaranteed return from capital expenditure. Repair and maintenance deliver a lot lower return therefore built in failure and big capital projects to fix are how the system is set up to run the business. Idiotic
