In Kenya, adolescents continue to face criminal charges for engaging in consensual, non-coercive, non-exploitative sexual relations. @ReprorightsAFR is using the law to challenge this harmful practice.
*Why this matters:*
✅ Adolescents deserve protection, not punishment
✅ They need access to age-appropriate sexuality education
✅ We must uphold their right to health and dignity
✅ Criminalization fuels stigma, fear, and barriers to health care
👉 Follow @ReprorightsAFR for updates on why decriminalization matters and how it improves adolescents’ access to reproductive health services and information.

Adolescent pregnancy is the leading cause of death among girls aged 15–19. If they get pregnant, teenage girls face greater risk of
🔴 Complications like eclampsia, infections & haemorrhage,
🔴 Preterm births & related health consequences,
🔴 Poorer quality care & mistreatment,
🔴 Long-term health consequences after birth.
WHO releases new recommendations to help prevent early pregnancy & reduce these risks 🔗https://t.co/5K98iApk4e

A recent Access to Medicines Platform (AtMP) study on cross-country policy analysis in Kenya, Zambia, and Uganda highlights critical gaps in RMNCAH policies, slowing progress toward achieving the ENAP-EPMM global targets. One key indicator is skilled birth attendance, with a global target of 95%. While strides have been made, the study found that 🇰🇪 Kenya achieved 88%, 🇿🇲 Zambia 80% and 🇺🇬 Uganda 91%.
To bridge this gap, we must:
✅ Strengthen health systems to improve infrastructure and maternal health services.
✅ Invest in the health workforce by training and deploying more skilled birth attendants.
✅ Enhance policy implementation with adequate funding and accountability.
✅ Address sociocultural and financial barriers that prevent women from accessing skilled care.

According to a 2024 study by Access to Medicines Platform on Cross-Country Policy Analysis of the Effectiveness of Implementation of the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP) and Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM) strategies in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia, the following gaps and challenges have been identified in Kenya’s context:
✍️Inadequate equity and access: Inadequate commodities mainly due to lack of ordering by Counties while others have debts with KEMSA
✍️Social and cultural barriers: Socio-economic challenges which predispose teenagers to early pregnancy.
✍️Health system weaknesses: Weak implementation of policies in place to strengthen health systems.
✍️Poor policy implementation: Misaligned priorities between the Counties and National government.
✍️Lack of data and monitoring tools: No accountability for maternal and newborn deaths, evidenced by non-existent or inactive (MPDSR)Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response System in some counties
