Fantastic finish with @lceeq Year 3, Cohort 3 of grades 5-7 teachers in #Quebec. Lots of energy, learning and discussions related to engaging students in meaningful mathematics and sense making! Great work by this group! 👏🏼🙏🏼#DNAMath#LCEEQmath@jryanlceeq@ETSBMathSci
Year 3 of the @LCEEQ Summer Math Institute begins tomorrow morning! It's hard to believe it's my last year. I'm going to make the most of it with new instructor @FarshidSafi and table mates @_Thurbs_ and @MarinaM_PE!
Make a cameo appearance @ed_nolan if you can! #DNAmath
How do you feel about teaching kids to divide & writing their remainder like this: R3 instead of using a fraction/decimal? I feel like kids don’t understand the why but can easily put 3/4 in context. #help#MSMT35 @ed_nolan @ETSBMathSci @jhalletsb @_Thurbs_
@ed_nolan Thanks @ed_nolan! This will definitely help when I discuss more with my colleague tomorrow. I’m worried about a possible “ expiring rule” associated with the remainder way though? #DNAMath
Thank you so much for your input everyone!! I spent a good 20 minutes with my student today and he was WAY more into sharing his thinking and has grasped the concept now. #success
Can someone help me discuss this mistake with this student? He can’t explain his reasoning to me and I’m not sure how to unpack this! @jhalletsb @ETSBMathSci@s_casement@_Thurbs_ @ed_nolan
@MKGoindi @jhalletsb @ETSBMathSci@s_casement@_Thurbs_ @ed_nolan Funny you mention that cause he’s a little pro with base ten!! You’re right though so I’ll have some examples with less digits for him today. Thanks!! #MSMT35
@ETSBMathSci@mrs_b_green @jhalletsb @s_casement@_Thurbs_ @ed_nolan @ETSBMathSci I will have a new example ready when I meet with him tomorrow. At the time, I never mentioned his answer being wrong. My questioning was more along the lines of “Good work! (He’s sensitive) Could you explain to me how you got this answer?”
@mrs_b_green @jhalletsb @ETSBMathSci@s_casement@_Thurbs_ @ed_nolan @mrs_b_green I did and he completely shut down. He tried to read it to me 2-3 times and started getting tears in his eyes. I’ll spend some extra one and one time with him tomorrow.
