Collaboration is critical as we work to end the destruction of homes and communities from wildfire. Check out how @IBHS_org and @NFPA are accelerating our joint efforts: https://t.co/npMXdzwZdh
Always an impressive job by @NHC_Atlantic and the brave Hurricane Hunters to collect invaluable data.
NOAA and the NWS remains one of the best ROIs of American taxpayer dollars. No wonder the GOP and the Heritage Foundation want to eviscerate it.
NEW: We’re outside of our office building right now in downtown St. Petersburg, where dozens have gathered to take pictures of the crane that fell last night.
As the sun came up, here’s how it looks @TB_Times:
This. This. This. 1 million times this.
Over 75% of tornadoes are rated as EF2 and lower.
Proper building codes can save homes from being leveled and protect the families inside if a tornado strikes.
Florida’s wind code should be copied by every SCS-prone state.
A lesson I’m learning from the photos out of these intense tornadoes across Florida today is that, to nobodies surprise, houses built to a robust wind code *survive*, even in the face of 120-130mph winds - a lesson Dixie and Tornado Alley could learn #flwx
Okay, this is a wild stat.
Tampa received 11.23" of rainfall on Wednesday from #Milton. Their previous wettest October 1-31st was 10.33" in 1922.
THEY BROKE THE MONTHLY RECORD IN A SINGLE DAY.
#Hurricane#Milton has made landfall near Siesta Key, FL - the 5th US Gulf Coast hurricane landfall this year (Beryl, Debby, Francine and Helene are other 4). This ties 2005 and 2020 for 2nd most Gulf hurricane landfalls on record, trailing only 1886 (6 Gulf hurricane landfalls).
Again.
Why do we rarely see measured inland winds equal the NHC's max landfall wind speed?
NHC wind speeds are measured over open water.
As winds begin to interact with land, the frictional effects typically reduce wind speeds by 10-20% almost instantaneously.
#Milton
@FLClimateCenter Let’s not discount the 100 mile swath of surge to the south and the massive rain rates in Tampa right now. But the tornadoes are indeed up there.
