The stains on these benches are blood, and they have been there since June 1944.

The benches stand in the village church of Angoville-au-Plain, Normandy. On 6 June, two medics of the 2nd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore, turned the church into an aid station while the fighting swung back and forth outside. Over roughly three days they treated about 80 men, American and German, and a local child. When a German officer asked them to take his wounded as well, they agreed. Both were awarded the Silver Star.

The church is dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, patron saints of physicians. Wright died in 2013 and is buried in its churchyard.

Bloomberg just dropped the most disturbing investigation I have read this year, and every AI builder should read it and take it seriously.

On February 28, two Tomahawk missiles hit an elementary school in Minab, a small town in southern Iran. 156 people died. At least 123 were children. The Pentagon knew within hours that it had bombed a school.

The school had its own website. It was labeled on Google Maps. You could see the soccer pitch from a satellite view. You could see the brightly painted walls. Any 12-year-old with a browser could tell what the building was.

The AI system could not.

Inside US Central Command, personnel were using Palantir's Maven Smart System. It is an AI targeting platform running on a $1.3 billion Pentagon contract, and embedded inside it is Anthropic's Claude.

On day one of the war, more than 1,000 targets went through it in 24 hours. Work that used to take a team hours per target got compressed into minutes.

The satellite imagery Maven was pulling from was seven years old. The site was still tagged in the database as an Islamic Revolutionary Guard facility.

The system spat it out as a recommended day-one target. Humans signed off. The first missile flew. Then a second one landed minutes later to hit the people who came to help.

Investigators later found that some Central Command staff had assumed Maven would flag stale intelligence for them. It did not. Nobody had told it to.

Palantir told Bloomberg the government is responsible for the underlying data. The Pentagon's civilian harm mitigation team, the people whose actual job is to catch a target like this, had been cut back before the war started.

This is not AI going rogue. This is the opposite.

This is AI doing exactly what it was built to do at exactly the speed it was built to do it. And a school full of little girls got vaporized because the humans in the loop trusted the machine more than they trusted their own eyes.

I keep thinking about the version of this story that comes next. What happens when the system is faster. When the target list is not 1,000 in a day but 10,000. When "review" becomes a button the operator has three seconds to hit before the next target loads. When there is no human left slow enough to notice that a soccer pitch is not a helipad.

We are not talking about a spam filter mislabeling an email. We are talking about a system that turned a seven-year-old database entry into two cruise missiles landing on children in the middle of a morning class.

A UN-backed panel has now called it a potential war crime.

In terms of children killed, it is the deadliest American targeting error of the entire 21st century. And according to Bloomberg, some of Defense Secretary Hegseth's own advisors are worried that too much public scrutiny of Maven might slow down its adoption inside the Pentagon.

Read that last line again.

If you build this stuff, you own what it does. You do not get to hide behind "the government owns the data." The whole pitch of your product is that speed and integration save lives. When it takes them instead, that is also on you.

I am not against AI in defense. I am against AI in a hurry. Speed is the entire mechanism that made Minab possible. Every guardrail we already know how to build takes time, and time is exactly what the system was designed to eliminate.

So here is the question I have not been able to stop asking, and I genuinely want to know what you think.

If a piece of software helped kill 123 children in a single morning while behaving exactly as designed, what does "responsible AI" even mean anymore?

Pozimi telo večino energije porabi za gretje. Kot hiša v januarju: peč gori ves dan, za vse drugo ostane malo. Zato te zebe v roke in noge, hitreje se utrudiš in te vleče k težji hrani.

Poleti tega stroška skoraj ni. Telo ima energijo za prebavo, kožo, lase, spanje in obrambo pred bolezni. Zato se poleti redko prehladiš.

Pa sonce. Svetloba telesu pove, da je dan in da je čas za delo. Pozimi hodiš v službo v temi in se vračaš v temi. Telo dobi premalo tega signala, zato je zaspano in brez volje.

Še hrana. Poleti ti narava sama ponudi zrelo sadje in zelenjavo, polno sladkorja in mineralov. To je hitro gorivo, ki telo nahrani brez napora.

Odrasli moški, »podjetniki«, pišejo traktate o FSD, analizirajo vsak update in ob novem meniju na zaslonu skoraj doživijo orgazem. Tehnološki napredek merijo po tem, koliko manj morajo sami držati volan.

Mene zanima nekaj drugega: kje imate čas za to sranje? Kje energijo?

Jaz imam dizla. Pravzaprav traktor. Po enem mesecu je že usran kot svinja. In to se mi zdi precej zdrav odnos do avtomobila.

Avto je orodje. Kot vrtalnik. Ne ljubim ga, ne občudujem ga in o njem ne pišem esejev.

Če pri štiridesetih še vedno potrebuješ avto, da se počutiš zanimivega, FSD ni tehnološka revolucija.

Je samo zelo drag nadomestek za osebnost.

🇳🇴Vedno si dopovedujemo, da je Norveška boljša od nas , ker je bogata z nafto. Motimo se. Bogata je zato, ker razmišlja drugače. In prav ta način razmišljanja je edino, kar nam v resnici manjka, da bi ji bili podobni. Naj razložim.

Norveška je ena tistih držav, ki se na seznamih najbogatejših držav sveta venomer uvrščajo na sam vrh. A ko prideš sem, te ne prevzame denar. Prevzame te nekaj drugega. Prevzame te občutek, da je nekdo sedel in premislil vsak korak, ki ga narediš čez dan, in potem vse odvečne pobrisal.

Ustavim se na bencinski črpalki. Ni zaslona s petnajstimi pod meniji. Ni kartice zvestobe. Ni vprašanja, ali želim vrečko, hrenovko in srečo v žrebu. Prisloniš kartico ali telefon k točilki in gorivo steče. Brez enega samega klika. Kot da bi se nekdo vprašal, kateri koraki so pri točenju goriva sploh potrebni, in vse ostale vrgel v smeti.

Prideš v kamp. Ni recepcije, ni obrazcev, ni gospe, ki v zvezku išče tvojo rezervacijo. Prisloniš kartico, dobiš številko, vstopiš. Konec.

Norvežani so obsedeni z uporabniško izkušnjo. Ne z lepoto, ne s statusom, ne s tem, da je videti drago. Obsedeni so s tem, da iz vsakega procesa odstranijo odvečen korak. Cel narod razmišlja kot oblikovalec uporabniške izkušnje , ki mu vsak nepotreben klik povzroča fizično bolečino.

In prav zato so preklopili na elektriko pri avtomobilih. Ne zaradi planeta, ne zaradi Bruslja. Elektrika je preprosto zmagala test uporabniške izkušnje. Manj korakov, manj servisa, manj drame. Zato so januarja na vsej Norveškem prodali sedem novih bencinarjev. Sedem. Ne sedem tisoč. 97 odstotkov novih avtomobilov je električnih.

Prevozil sem 2000 kilometrov njihovih cest in šele zdaj mi je nekaj postalo jasno. Najvišja omejitev na avtocesti je 110. Večinoma voziš 80, kje na res urejeni cesti morda 90. Prvi dan sem godrnjal kot pravi Slovenec. Kam se pa vsem tako mudi. Potem pa dojameš, da se nikamor ne mudi in da je prav to poanta. Norvežan je iz vožnje odstranil odvečen korak, ki mu doma rečemo adrenalin. Avto ni oder za dokazovanje, ampak orodje, ki te pripelje od točke A do točke B. Brez prehitevanj, brez trobljenja, brez tekmovanja, čigav je večji. Brez prehitevanj. Brez hupanja. Brez enega zastoja.

In rezultat? Po podatkih Mednarodnega transportnega foruma ima Norveška že skoraj desetletje zapored najnižje število smrtnih žrtev na cesti na prebivalca med vsemi razvitimi državami. Ne zato, ker bi imeli boljše avte. Ampak ker so se odpovedali nepotrebni hitrosti prav tako, kot so se odpovedali nepotrebnemu kliku na črpalki. Manj korakov. Manj mrtvih.

Ta obsedenost s preprostostjo se vidi celo v njihovih hišah. Norveška hiša se z naravo ne prepira. Ne postavi se na vrh hriba, da bi ga premagala. Uleže se vanj. Les, steklo, nizka streha, nič odvečnega. Hiša ni spomenik lastnikovemu egu, ampak del pokrajine. Kot da bi bila tam že prej kot lastnik.

In tu pride tisto, kar bi si moral Slovenec prepisati v beležko. Na Norveškem imajo pravico, ki ji rečejo allemannsretten. Pravico vsakogar, da hodi po naravi, da prespi pod milim nebom, da postavi šotor, ne da bi ga kdo preganjal. Divji kamp tam ni prekršek. Je pravica.
Pri nas te za isti šotor ob jezeru čaka inšpektor in kazen. Logika je butalska in preprosta. Državljanu ne zaupamo, zato ga kaznujemo, še preden sploh kaj naredi.

In prav tu je paradoks, ki ga doma nikoli ne bomo razumeli. Norvežan za seboj ne pusti smeti. Ne zato, ker ga nekdo gleda. Ampak ker se v naravi počuti kot doma, doma pa ne razmetavaš smeti po dnevni sobi. Ko človeku naravo zaupaš, jo začne varovati. Ko ga za vsak korak kaznuješ, jo začne sovražiti.

Mi smo prepričani, da red pomeni več pravil, več tabel, več prepovedi, več kazni. Norvežani so nas prehiteli z ravno obratno logiko. Manj korakov. Več zaupanja. In naenkrat vse deluje.
