The purpose is to crowd-source the restoration of the Mars Viking Lander GCMS digital data set. The main objective of the Landers in 1976 was to search for life in the martian soil. The Viking GCMS data exists today as bar graphs on 16-mm microfilm & data stored as binary data.

@jgerity @MattersDarkly Well said, having the data set accessible/usable is good scientific practice - right now we're working on having the Viking GCMS data to corroborate new information about Mars from @MarsPhoenix and @MarsCuriosity such as detections of perchlorates and organics
