A deep sense of sorrow has settled over St Brendan’s this week as we mourn the sudden passing of a much-loved father and dear friend, Matt Noone Senior.
Matt was a lifelong supporter of the club, and served with great distinction as a player, coach and at committee level. For many years, he was the go-to man for Galway football tickets. During the team’s glory years in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Matt went out of his way to help everyone get hold of a much sought-after ticket. Though I’m sure at times he would have welcomed a break from the constant phone calls and knocks on the door, he was always his cheerful self and went above and beyond the call of duty to help people secure the prized paperwork for the big games. Thanks to Matt (or Mattie as some of us called him), many in the parish have cherished memories of attending big matches in Croke Park. Matt loved football - he cut his teeth early on as a player at Killyan NS, developing that noted left boot or “left hammer” as he used to call it himself! His best position was right-corner forward as it enabled him get that left hammer into action to best effect putting many an unfortunate corner back to shame! As a supporter, he was an excellent judge of football and players. He was an ever-present at our club matches and as recently as last Friday night he was there, proudly supporting his beloved St Brendan’s. He was a friend to many, one of the most helpful people you could meet and with his great sense of humour he always had a word, and often a quip, for everyone.
He played a huge part in fostering the strong culture and spirit in our club, and his loss will be felt deeply by all who had both the pleasure and privilege of knowing him. St Brendan’s offer our deepest condolences to his family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam uasal. Ni bheidh a leithead ann aris.
