I turn 29 + 1 today at 9:02 PM Pacific.
As I desperately cling to my 20s, here are 29 + 1 things I’ve learned during my time on this planet that have lead to success
1. Always ask questions! The stupider the question the better!
2. Don’t ask what’s the least I can do. Ask what’s the most I can bear!
3. Your body is powerful. Move every day! You can’t overcome a weak body with a powerful mind!
4. Hug a dog, laugh with a child, make a stupid joke!
5. Social capital is more important than financial capital. If you have a ton of friends, money will come
6. Try your hardest every day. Some days that means giving 10% because that’s all you got!
7. Help the less fortunate. Mentoring and teaching gives me a ton of joy
8. Learn SQL as soon as possible
9. Invest in the stock market as soon as possible
10. Buy the best laptop you can afford. You’re an artist who deserves the best paint brushes!
11. The people who stay in your life are meant to be there. The ones who leave, let them leave
12. When you interview, never accept the first offer. Companies ALWAYS leave negotiation wiggle room. Make sure to get it
13. When you interview, run one mile before it. This activates your brain, reduces your anxiety and increases your confidence
14. Dont tolerate a bad manager. Start interviewing the second you’re mistreated. And even before then!
15. Never stay longer than 2 years at a job. Something better will come along
16. Never renew a lease. Living somewhere new every year keeps you sharper because you have to relearn to live
17. Be gentle with yourself when you make mistakes. You’ll find bravery in that gentleness!
18. Be grateful for the little things. The hand most of us were dealt was extremely good
19. Forgive your parents. They were just kids too when they raised you. Forgiving them gives you power back over your life!
20. Stop hanging out with friends who only want to party. If your friends aren’t going what you want to do, find new friends.
21. Quit your job and take a risk. You might just make a million dollars
22. Breathe deeply and remember to exhale to give your heart a rest
23. Walk in sunlight as much as you can
24. Stop scrolling on your phone after 10 PM. It’s really bad for you!
25. Remember your friends who supported you along the way!
26. Be happy with growing old. It’s a gift that so many people don’t receive
27. Don’t stress too much about losing your hair. It’s better to have high testosterone and no hair than low testosterone and full hair
28. Strength training is as important as cardio! Don’t skip leg day!
29. Start building your personal brand as soon as possible
30. Remember that when you turn 30, the game isn’t over. It’s just beginning!
I failed a drug test!
We had a huge milestone with incentives attached at work and despite being at the core of the team that would deliver the job, I failed a routine drug test.
My senior managers on site went to meet the project director. "if this guy is not on site, forget the milestone"
They told him they trusted me, and that I would never take drugs. So the director said I should come on-site and another nurse do an instant drug test.
I passed! We delivered the milestone. We later found out the failed test was poppy seeds in bread.
I want you to pay attention to this. I have been very lucky in life. I grew up in obscurity and I ended up working in different capacities on construction projects with a total value of over £1billion.
I have worked with people from all over the world. I have also visited more than 10 countries.
Nothing beats hard work.
I once worked with an Australian Engineer in London. He was hardworking. If you talk about anything on site, he will come back with a CAD sketch nobody asked for. He became a Senior engineer in no time. The last time I checked, he was back in Australia as engineering lead.
I worked with a Polish electrical project manager. This man knows his stuff like fire. When the company was downsizing, he was unsackable, because the director knew he was the one who will handle the jobs that would bring them back and he did.
Another English MEP Manager, very knowledgeable. When I heard his salary per day, I was shocked.
A Scottish PM as well, I wasn't surprised when the company paid for his flights to and from Scotland to London and his accommodation. He was that good
A Nigerian Engineer I worked with a degree in Maths before getting a First Class in Civil Engineering, in no time became a PM on another massive project.
On that project I failed the test, I was always the first to come in and last to leave. I knew more than 200 people by their first names. If anything needs doing, everyone knows that Ade will solve it.
A Project manager wrote me an email one time and said "The cream will always rise to the top"
I beg you. Please whatever you pick to do, do it so well you are the best at it. Be so good they can't ignore you.
God help us ❤️🙏
How to become a data scientist in 6 steps:
1. Pick a project that you want to solve
2. Collect data on your project
3. Explore your data

- Try R or Python.
- Try Machine Learning Algorithms like XGBoost.
- Try Unsupervised algorithms like K-means.
5. Find Actionable Business Insights
- The key is action. Can they take action from the insight?
- Any business insight that leads to an action is useful.
6. Measure Results
- What impact has the change had?
- Measure improvements over 30 days, 90 days.
If you follow this process, you're becoming a data scientist.
It’s the same with programming.
This picture reminded of people that give up on coding too soon.
Coding is damn difficult. It’s not something that you learn in a few weeks.
Give it time before deciding to give up.
I almost gave up as well. Coding is not something that comes to me naturally, so I had to put extra effort and be patient.

I had a crap laptop for 5 years.
I learned to code on it
I went to work with it.
I started a freelancing business with it.
Only after 5 years, I got an upgrade.
You don't need a "MacBook" to get started.
Seriously.
Start with what you have for as long as you can.
