PAKISTAN: The alarming news of at least three deaths and nearly dozen injuries following live ammunition fired by the security forces today against the peaceful Baloch protesters in Quetta is a shocking indictment of the Pakistani authorities’ utter disregard for human life. In blatant violation of the right to protest, the authorities conducted mass arrests and fired tear gas before resorting to unlawful use of lethal weapons against the unarmed protesters. Mobile networks in the city remain suspended, hindering free flow of information.
Amnesty International urges the Pakistani authorities to immediately stop the reckless crackdown against the peaceful protesters and guarantee the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, in line with Pakistan’s international human rights obligations. All those detained solely for exercising their right to protest must be released immediately. Authorities should also conduct a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation into the unlawful force and bring those responsible to justice.

The month of July saw a surge in killings and enforced disappearances across #Balochistan, by security forces and other law enforcement agencies. The was a drastic rise from June to July from 62 disappearances and 25 killings to 76 disappearances and 31 killings all in a months. The rally held by BYC was also shown as one of the many reasons why people were being picked up.

Urgent attention!

Currently, the Pakistani Army and FC have launched another brutal and violent attack on the peaceful Baloch National Gathering sit-in in Gwadar.

Surrounding the sit-in from all sides, they have indiscriminately fired upon peaceful protesters and subjected them to severe violence, resulting in multiple injuries and the arrest of hundreds.

At this moment, the Pakistani state is committing extreme oppression and tyranny against peaceful protesters in Gwadar. The entire city has been held hostage at gunpoint by the Pakistani military. We are not being allowed to evacuate the injured, nor are ambulances being given passage.

Now, the scenes in Gwadar are nothing short of apocalyptic!

I urge you all to immediately write to human rights organizations, journalists, and anyone concerned with human rights, as thousands of lives are currently at extreme risk in Gwadar.

Pakistan🇵🇰: @amnesty is alarmed at the use of unlawful and unnecessary force against the participants of the Baloch National Gathering by security forces yesterday. It is a blatant violation of people’s right to freedom of peaceful assembly.

On 27 June, Frontier Corps reportedly fired on unarmed and peaceful protestors in Mustang, Balochistan, resulting in 14 injuries, several among them serious. A complete internet shutdown has also been imposed in Gwadar, hindering the flow of information in and outside the region.

Amnesty International calls on the Pakistan authorities to immediately lift the internet shutdown in Balochistan, and fulfil its obligations under domestic and international human rights law to facilitate people’s right to peaceful protest by lifting the road blockades on the way to Gwadar to allow freedom of movement for protestors.
