Last night, a US national Matthew VanDyke accused of plotting terrorist acts was released and allowed to return to his country.

•⁠ ⁠Mar 13: A group of foreign nationals, including VanDyke, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of conspiring to carry out terrorist activities against India.
•⁠ ⁠Mar 16: NIA court submission alleged that the accused was supporting anti-India insurgent groups. It was alleged that the accused had confessed to abetting terrorist activities.
•⁠ ⁠During US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India (May 23-26), US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor raised the issue with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
•⁠ ⁠Sep 8: UAPA charges were dropped against VanDyke, a foreign national accused of terrorism. This stands in sharp contrast to the law’s widespread misuse against Indian citizens by the Govt and where such cases are deliberately dragged on.
•⁠ ⁠Sep 24: VanDyke was released from custody and allowed to go home.

Obviously US pressure determined this outcome but what did India get in return? More fundamentally, how were these suspicious foreign individuals given visas and allowed to travel through India to Myanmar in the first place? The HM must answer this.

The PM has failed to protect India’s elections, institutions and our national security.

The most expensive part of a hospital bill may never touch the hospital at all.

A patient admitted for care has no way of knowing whether the price on a medical consumable reflects its actual cost or a markup fixed long before it ever reached the ward. That gap in information is, at its core, a public health issue.

A survey of hospital consumables in Maharashtra found an IV infusion set with a trade price of ₹11.05 carrying a printed MRP of ₹325 ; a markup of 2,841%. A syringe procured at ₹6.75 carried an MRP of ₹57.20. A catheter procured at ₹29.41 carried an MRP of ₹310.

These are not elective purchases. Patients cannot compare prices, seek alternatives, or question a number printed on a box while receiving care and the MRP itself is often fixed upstream by manufacturers and distributors, disconnected from the trade price by a wide, unexplained margin. The result is a system where the party bearing the cost has the least information to evaluate it.

The regulatory gap is structural: scheduled medicines are capped under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Most medical devices and consumables are not leaving both the pricing and the information around it almost entirely unmonitored.

A review of these findings and clear guidelines on the permissible gap between trade procurement price and declared MRP have been recommended to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the NPPA ; a step toward closing not just a pricing gap, but the information gap patients are left to bear alone.

Corruption is not an issue anymore because everyone understands (and even respects) this basic human urge to hoard, to make more money. We even celebrate the top 15-20 billionaires of the nation as some sort of beacons of our culture and pride.

But what gets missed in this razzle-dazzle is that corruption is not just someone making extra money by bending rules - it also means those bent rules KILL people. In building fires, collapses, fake cancer medicines, adulterated foods, drunk driving, and a hundred other ways.

Corruption actually means someone making money by murdering people, murdering us.

The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect.  Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life.

This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public. 

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven’t given the public a real answer. Until they do, the merger shouldn’t move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede.

Supreme Court allows convicted rape-of-minor convict Asaram Bapu a full-time trained caregiver of his choice in jail.

Years earlier, 83-year-old undertrial Father Stan Swamy, suffering from Parkinson’s, had to fight for weeks just to get a straw and sipper so he could drink water without spilling. Medical bail repeatedly denied. He died in custody.

Same system. Same courts. Vastly different urgency for basic human dignity. Selective compassion isn’t justice. It’s the opposite.

Usually the end goal of these project isn't about empowering marginalized, but still there is some good coming out.
