Since January, over 41,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo 🇨🇩 have sought safety in Uganda 🇺🇬, bringing the total number of Congolese in Uganda to nearly 600,000.

Florence, who fled war in DR Congo and rebuilt her life in Uganda, reminded me why refugees must not be stereotyped.

PS @tybisa on refugee resettlement question: @NLinUganda supports Uganda’s open door policy for refugees in appreciation of the fact that we do not settle refugees in camps but communities, where their dignity is preserved. If there is a consideration, it must be from that perspective. As and when they formally reach out to us, we shall engage @OPMUganda which is responsible for refugees in UG for them to discuss viability.
Hon. Eng. Hillary Onek met with the UNHCR - Filippo Grandi on the sidelines of the 75th UNHCR EXCOM happening in Geneva. They discussed the need to increase support to Uganda refugee response. UG is the largest refugee host in Africa with 1.76 million refugees.
It was a such a humbling experience to interact with the refugees especially the young women and children in Nakivale Settlement, iam definately not the same after looking straight into their needy eyes- we have to do more..

Happening: We are now holding the Pre-Global Refugee Forum (GRF) conference at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala ahead of the 2023 GRF planned to take place in Geneva (December 13-15).
On behalf of H.E President @KagutaMuseveni, I have announced our country’s refugee response pledges. I thank the development partners who have also announced their pledges. These pledges will also be announced at the GRF next month.

In Uganda, I just met Jean Batsi, one of the 26,000 refugees who fled DRC in 2023 due to increased violence.
After his wife and children were killed, he sought safety in Kyangwali, where 131,000 refugees are hosted.
Jean and others like him need peace and your urgent support.

Mr. Malemo fled the DRC, leaving his thriving business behind. Through perseverance & determination he is rebuilding it, employing refugees to produce porridge &corn flour.
