🚨 Gada Commando, ENDF and Qeerroo (Oromo youth) kill over 22 Amhara civilians in Mender 3 as massacres continue across East Wollega

More than 22 Amhara civilians, including religious leaders and elderly residents, were killed in Mender 3, Gida Ayana Woreda, East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region, beginning on August 24, 2026, as attacks against Amhara communities continue across the area.

The massacre was carried out by armed Qeerroo groups (Oromo youth) backed by Oromia Region Gada Commando, regional security and militia forces, and the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF). The attackers used Kalashnikov rifles, machetes, swords, and other weapons, while ENDF and Gada Commando forces provided support and heavy-weapons cover.

At least 22 bodies have been recovered in Mender 3, while additional bodies remain scattered across fields, unburied and exposed to wild animals and vultures.

The attacks have also involved widespread burning, destruction, and looting of Amhara communities. Numerous homes in Mender 3 were burned, while livestock and other property were looted, loaded onto vehicles, and transported toward Nekemte. Andode, Mender 3, Mender 22, Fendika, and other communities in the area have suffered extensive destruction, with entire villages reduced to ashes.

In Mender 22, numerous Amhara civilians were also killed, with bodies remaining uncollected and unburied in the surrounding area.

Oromia Region Gada Commando, regional riot-control forces, Gachana Sirna, Repelola, militia forces, and armed Qeerroo groups have participated in the attacks alongside ENDF forces. ENDF units have provided heavy-weapons cover and transported armed groups between affected communities using military Ural vehicles.

ENDF Central Command forces under Lieutenant General Zewdu Belay and Western Command forces under Major General Amare Bahta have been involved in supporting the operations, including providing heavy-weapons cover and facilitating the movement of forces carrying out the attacks.

The killings in Mender 3 are part of continuing violence against Amhara communities across Gida Ayana Woreda and other parts of East Wollega, where numerous civilians have been killed, villages destroyed and looted, and thousands of residents displaced.

🚨 Amhara mother killed by Oromia Region Geda Commando forces; wounded young daughter found beside her body days later

An Amhara mother was killed on August 21 during attacks by Oromia Region Geda Commando forces in East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region. Her body was discovered several days later with her young daughter still sitting beside her.

The child, who had also suffered a gunshot wound, was found injured and suffering from hunger beside her mother’s body. She was heard saying, “I’m hungry.”

The killing occurred amid attacks against Amhara communities in East Wollega that began on August 18 and involved Oromia Region Special Forces, Geda Commando forces, Qerro (Oromo youth), and ENDF personnel.

These regime forces have carried out house-to-house attacks against civilians who were unable to flee, including pregnant women, mothers, the elderly, and other vulnerable residents.

#Ethiopia 🇪🇹 CPJ calls on Ethiopian authorities to release five journalists who have spent three years in jail awaiting trial for reporting on unrest in Amhara region. Gobeze Sisay, Meskerem Abera, Genet Asmamaw, and Dawit Begashaw were detained in April 2023 and face terrorism charges, for which they could face the death penalty, if found guilty.

In February 2026, a federal court ruled that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence for their joint case to proceed. But repeated adjournments have pushed the hearing to November 19, following the court’s August-to-October recess, their lawyers told CPJ.

Separately, Abay Zewdu was detained on August 10, 2023, a week after authorities declared a state of emergency in response to the Amhara insurgency. The court has yet to decide whether the prosecution has sufficient evidence for his case to proceed. Hearings are due to resume on October 16.

Prolonged pretrial detention and repeated judicial delays effectively amount to punishment without conviction, damaging both bodies and minds. Ethiopian authorities must not treat journalists as terrorists and must ensure prompt, fair, and transparent proceedings that respect their rights to due legal process.
