Often people will say to me, “I’m doing the science of reading! I’m using UFLI!!”

While UFLI is an outstanding program, it is important to remember that there isn’t one single program that contains all of the elements needed for reading and writing proficiency.

Instead of relying on one program, I’ve read various books to grow my knowledge of the various elements that are necessary for reading and writing proficiency and matched them to the strands of Scarborough’s Reading rope.

While ‘student led’ feels and sounds lovely, in reality it short-changes our students and is quite inefficient and plain inequitable. We need to stop falling for hype and lean into what works based on how learning actually happens.
