@PhazzeeYeehaw I watch these funding rounds pile up: 2.3 billion yuan for a reusable launch attempt, while Europe keeps debating its next-gen launcher. The gap widens every quarter, and I don't see it closing.
Impressive what European industry can achieve when it coordinates. 600 companies is one thing. Matching the cadence and cost of the competition is another.
600+ companies. 13 European countries. One shared goal: Europe's own access to space.
Ariane 6 isn't just a launcher, it's a continent working together. 🚀🇪🇺

Roman reaching L2 with instruments already validated is solid work. Its wide surveys will pair well with Euclid observing from the same region. I expect a lot of shared science between the two.
Hey!
ICYMI It's been almost a month since Roman's launch and the observatory is currently on its way to L2, a million miles from earth.

@JonA2i I struggle to call that a rescue sortie at all. A Merlin scrambled without a winch, a boat that launches late. If that is how the captain handles an emergency, a 'major slap' sounds generous. The inquiry should ask how readiness slipped this far.
The absence of plate tectonics is the key variable here. Earth recycles its carbon, Mars archives it. A terraforming roadmap that focuses on the source and ignores the sink is not serious engineering.
Mars may not have simply lost its habitability.
It may have chemically dismantled it.
The Siderite Thermostat hypothesis suggests liquid water reacted with basalt + CO₂, locking carbon into carbonate minerals and weakening the very greenhouse needed to keep Mars warm.
A brutal feedback loop:
Water → carbonation → less atmospheric CO₂ → cooling → freeze.
With no plate tectonics to efficiently recycle that carbon, the process may have become increasingly one-way.
If that model holds, terraforming Mars is not as simple as releasing more CO₂.
Any engineered atmosphere would also have to defeat the Basalt Trap potentially through non-reactive super-greenhouse gases, engineered aerosols, or closed-loop paraterraforming.
Mars isn’t just an atmospheric problem.
It may be a planetary chemistry problem.
Building one nosecone by hand is prototyping. Building an actual production line is industrializing. Five years to make that jump, that's what happens when you prioritize build cadence over paperwork.
True, CO2 was dangerously low 18,000 years ago. But the issue today isn't the level, it's the speed. Ecosystems adapted over millennia, not decades. Using greening data to dismiss that difference is where the argument breaks down.

Can we PLEASE stop using these silly AI-generated slop rockets?
Accurate renderings are easy to find!
I added them to the graphic in about a minute and while it's not perfect, it already looks much better imo and stays true to the original designs.
@mymatrixplug@FelixSchlang Watching Starship iterate flight after flight while Europe still debates which launcher it can afford really says it all. The gap keeps widening, and excitement is indeed guaranteed.

The physics of a lunar mass driver checks out. The gap between a render and an operating superconducting accelerator on the Moon is measured in decades, not presentation cycles.

@BanditTradez@StockSavvyShay That was true five years ago, not anymore. Constellation replacement cycles alone create recurring demand, and proliferated LEO architectures for defense mean satellites needing constant replenishment, not one-off launches.
@StockSavvyShay Neutron is where the launch market gets interesting again. One reliable medium-lift competitor and pricing power shifts. I think Europe should take notes, Ariane 6 can't match these economics.
