Its central figures come from Hindu scripture.
Its cultural memory is unmistakably Hindu.

INTERESTING: Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM CARES) Fund, which was set up in March 2020 during COVID to deal with emergency/distress situations, has accumulated a corpus of Rs 8,452 crore by end of FY 2024-25, but just Rs 87 lakh was spent, as per audit reports released. Still NO information on source of funds. PM CARES has so far refused to divulge any details under RTI Act. 🙏

Whining every day is also a choice. I see some of us in our state doing it on a daily basis. The constant narrative is how we’ve been left behind in GCCs (Global Capability Centres).

With around 12% share in the country’s GCC capacity, we’ve not been left behind but did not focus and scale up to our potential. This is being rectified for the last few years, and we’re trying to see if our state can increase the share toward 20%.

And you need to understand how we are dominating in a lot of frontier technologies.

In electronics, including very advanced electronics, Tamil Nadu holds a dominant share of around 50% or more of the country’s capacity.

I’ll give you a few examples.

Developing the ability to produce 74 layer PCBs is no joke. Our capacity is on par with international leaders.

We are able to produce copper clad laminates, which is very significant.

You need to know about ceramic chips. Ceramic chip are essential for smartphones, EVs, industrial electronics, servers, and even aerospace like NASA’s Mars helicopter.

Murata of Japan is the global leader in ceramic chips with around 40% of the world market. They are already in Chennai and operating at a small scale . If successful and scaled, Chennai can become a significant global manufacturing hub for ceramic chips.

Yesterday’s news of the Voltas Atomberg JV deciding to set up their plant for indigenous AC compressors manufacturing in Chennai is a huge development.

Chennai now has the potential to establish an entire ecosystem for end to end indigenous manufacturing of air conditioners.

For the last two years, Google has been testing and producing Pixel products in Chennai . From what I hear, they are satisfied with the outputs.

Now that Google has decided to move its entire ecosystem out of China to India and Vietnam, Tamil Nadu has a good chance to pitch for a larger share of the same.

What L&T calls India’s largest single cluster AI Factory is coming to Chennai.

In the EV ecosystem too, just one single state of ours holds a dominant share of around 50% of our country’s capacity.

We are strongly growing in many areas of deep tech and emerging technologies.

So don’t worry. We are doing fine.

We should continue to compete fiercely on all fronts. No second question about it.

Unless we are firing on all cylinders, there is no way to achieve our goal of $1.5 trillion GDP with a GDP per capita of around $20,000 by 2036.

But to expect Tamil Nadu to get all important investments in every sector is not realistic.

Tone down the expectations.

I didn't ask the Maha Tribal Minister to build the road. I asked him to make ONE phone call.

Today I approached Maharashtra Tribal Development Minister @drashokuike_mla in person regarding a 100-metre road used by tribal children to reach a Tribal Ashram School,

I have already approached the PWD JE, Gram Panchayat Secretary, MLA and others.

I wasn't asking for a contract.
I wasn't asking for money.
I wasn't even asking him to sanction the road himself.

I simply expected the Minister responsible for Tribal Development to say: “Let me ask the concerned officer to look into it.”

Instead, I was told to write to the NCP MLA of that area.

Seriously?

If a Tribal Minister cannot make one phone call or ask his officers to examine a 100-metre road used by tribal children, then what exactly is an ordinary citizen supposed to expect from the system?

I am a BJP supporter, and this kind of high-handed attitude from our own netas and babus is deeply disappointing.

I was going through comments on the issue of Gujarat getting preferential treatment over other states in investments. I also saw how the Centre has been “kind” to Tamil Nadu.

Many people who commented are not aware of how the system works.

Many said Tamil Nadu needs to be thankful to the Centre for the PLI schemes.

You have to understand that no one is doing anyone a favour.

There are states ruled by the BJP that are struggling to attract investments. If it were possible, would the Centre not have redirected the investments there?

Tamil Nadu has captured a major portion of investments in electronics. Around 70% of the jobs created in the electronics industry in our country during the last few years are based only in Tamil Nadu. This is because the investors chose that way.

Likewise, the seven projects approved under EMC yesterday for Tamil Nadu are not due to any benevolence. The companies eligible for approval such as Tata Electronics, Kaynes Technologies and Motherson Technologies have chosen Tamil Nadu.

Yes, the Centre gives clearance for sensitive and strategic investments to Tamil Nadu. What is benevolent about it? Are we not part of India?

Also, would it not be better that a state in India gets the investment instead of the country losing it completely? Many high end defence research units want to be in Tamil Nadu because of the ecosystem. L&T is already into even building satellites at Coimbatore.

Kulasekarapattinam was chosen as a space hub because ISRO said that is the best location in the country. And Tamil Nadu is using the opportunity wisely by creating a huge space park there.

Many decades ago, before going to Sriharikota, ISRO was particular only about Kulasekarapattinam. At that time, the Tamil Nadu government messed it up so that ISRO had no option but to look elsewhere.

All international suppliers of Apple are in Tamil Nadu. From Foxconn to every other company, the entire Apple ecosystem found Tamil Nadu to be the best for them. This is not because the Centre told them. It is because that made business sense for them.

Tata Electronics is building India’s biggest residential industrial town near Hosur. That single plant already employs around 80,000 people. TEAL, a high end precision engineering subsidiary of Titan, based on its experience over the last many decades in Hosur, understood how Hosur offers one of the best ecosystems for high end electronics in the country.

It is not that the Centre is the giver and the state is the receiver. You need to understand how much the Centre also is dependent on developed states to support less developed ones.

The relationship between the Centre and the State is mutual. Both benefit from each other.

If politicians could solely decide where investments should go, you can imagine how things would be by now.

It is investors who choose the state.

So a state’s growth or lack of it largely depends on its capabilities, competitiveness, human capital and an excellent ecosystem.

Annamalai left the BJP not because of Hindutva politics or lack of a free hand to operate, but because he cannot pursue regional chauvinist politics under the BJP umbrella. It is not his fault; Tamil Nadu’s public only appreciates cult politics or divisive regional pride and victimhood politics.

Now let’s debunk his claims with a few examples:

Today, the Central government has approved 31 projects under the ECMS (Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme), with three states getting the major share.

Tamil Nadu: 7 projects
Maharashtra: 6 projects
Haryana: 6 projects

The whole ecosystem of Apple mobile phone manufacturing came up and flourished in TN because of PLI. Google’s biggest data centre investment plan is coming up in Andhra Pradesh. Multiple expressway, airport and other projects are completed or progressing in southern India; TN and AP will be among the biggest beneficiaries of the shipbuilding industry, etc.

Most big investments in semiconductors go to Gujarat because it was the first state to introduce a Semiconductor policy in 2022, promising subsidies on land, water, electricity, etc., which no state has matched. TN’s semiconductor policy came with a two-year delay. Let’s do a cursory comparison of both state policies in the image below. The same goes for the development of Olympic-level sports infrastructure in Gujarat, mainly done with state revenue, not central government grants.

I can give multiple examples to prove how this Gujarat rhetoric is nothing but a new style of anti-Delhi politics and how UP and Bihar were neglected by past governments to support southern states, but that will be for some other time. Yes, I can also understand Annamalai ji’s compulsion to adopt this divisive regional politics, so no hard feelings for him.

But yes, I’m very happy for some Twitter C** intellectuals who celebrated Annamalai’s exit and said he had left Buddha Modi to do youngsters’ and new-age Hindutva politics. So his new-age and different politics is nothing but declaring Biharis as criminals and doing anti-North politics in the new wrapper of being anti-Gujarat.
