Field reports confirm that physical engagements consistent with the recent systematic targeted campaign against Amharas have already commenced in Wollega, Western Oromia, Ethiopia. On August 10, over 100 Amhara civilians—including pregnant women, mothers with newborns, children, and healthcare workers—were killed across eight consecutive days of unprovoked attacks in Anger Gutin town (Gida Ayana Woreda, East Wollega Zone). These targeted killings were accompanied by widespread arson against Amhara residential properties in Angar Gute, Andode Dichoo, and Tullu Lenca. Local evidence indicates joint operational involvement by Oromia Regional Special Forces, "Gedda Commando" units, and local irregular militias. Monitoring indicators strongly suggest this violence is poised to spill over immediately into neighboring woredas and zones, specifically Kirumu and Horo Guduru Wollega. A recent update (received today, August 25, 2026) indicates that the death toll surpassed 400 and over 300 Amhara residences are already burned.

🚨 Amhara mother killed by Oromia Region Geda Commando forces; wounded young daughter found beside her body days later

An Amhara mother was killed on August 21 during attacks by Oromia Region Geda Commando forces in East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region. Her body was discovered several days later with her young daughter still sitting beside her.

The child, who had also suffered a gunshot wound, was found injured and suffering from hunger beside her mother’s body. She was heard saying, “I’m hungry.”

The killing occurred amid attacks against Amhara communities in East Wollega that began on August 18 and involved Oromia Region Special Forces, Geda Commando forces, Qerro (Oromo youth), and ENDF personnel.

These regime forces have carried out house-to-house attacks against civilians who were unable to flee, including pregnant women, mothers, the elderly, and other vulnerable residents.

🚨 The remains of Komos Aba Tadesse Mekonnen, chief administrator of the Andode-Shashober Kidist Selassie Church in East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region, have been found, days after a TikTok video surfaced showing Oromia Region Geda Commando forces torturing him. Komos Aba Tadesse Mekonnen was responsible for overseeing the administration of most of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo churches in the area.

WELKAIT, ETHIOPIA - APRIL 08, 2022: A mound of stones marks the grave of three individuals on April 08, 2022 in Welkait, Ethiopia. The three individuals had been murdered in the town of Adriment during the TPLF occupation. During the TPLF occupation of the region a total of five individuals who had been murdered on a hill on the outskirts of town were dumped at this location and buried in a mass grave. They were members of the Welkait-Tegede community who were murdered because of their ethnicity. The nearby torture camp at Gehennab began operating 37 years ago in 1985 when the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) occupied Welkait as they fought against the Derg Regime before gaining control of the area in 1991. Welkait was Amhara land for as much as 1000 years prior to 1991 when the region was annexed and incorporated into Tigray by the TPLF. Survivors Of Benishangul-Gumuz Attack Recount Stories Of Escape And Loss
CHAGNI, ETHIOPIA - DECEMBER 31, 2020: Enatalem Admas, 50, fled Gilgel Beles in the Benishangul-Gumuz region and is now staying in a displaced persons camp on December 31, 2020 in Chagni, Ethiopia. Enatalem recounts: I came from Benishangul-Gumuz in the town of Gilgel Beles. I saw where breast were cut from woman and where human flesh was taken and eaten by those Gumuz militia. When I was working in Gilgel Beles I was selling a local alcohol called Talah. Gumuz men came to my home to buy the local alcohol and they asked me for onion and Mitmita (spices). They claimed they ate "live meet", mostly Christian meat and "it is tasty, I enjoy it". I told them that is bad don't ever do that again. They said "no, no, it is good, we will continue doing that". Some time later the Gumuz Special Forces came to our community, gathered us in the middle of the town for no reason and they shot us. They were Gumuz Special forces, government forces. Fortunately the federal forces reached the region and saved us. When the federal Forces left the region afterwards, the Gumuz returned and destroyed our property and displaced us". Enatalem also claims that the local government forces are the ones providing the Gumuz militias with weapons and other military logistics. Enatalem adds: We are not represented in the government. Every position in each local government office is occupied by members of the Gumuz minority so we have no power even to claim our rights there. When we appealed to the higher Benishangul-Gumuz officials they told us to just leave our land and go live in your homeland. But we have no any other homeland we were born there, we are indigenous to that area but the higher Benishangul-Gumuz officials ordered us to evacuate from the Benishangul-Gumuz region as soon as possible or they would order their special forces to destroy our homes. #Ethiopia 🇪🇹 CPJ calls on Ethiopian authorities to immediately release journalists Gobeze Sisay, Meskerem Abera, Genet Asmamaw, Dawit Begashaw, and Abay Zewdu, who have been in detention for three years awaiting trial, instead of pressuring them to admit to, and apologize for, taking part in a deadly insurgency in exchange for their freedom.

“After keeping these five journalists behind bars for years and delaying their trials, Ethiopian authorities are now trying to blackmail them into confessing to crimes that they have already denied in court,” said CPJ's Muthoki Mumo.

Ethiopia's Addis Standard opposition newspaper and ditto video channels are supported by the US National Endowment for Democracy @NEDemocracy, and, to be fair, they do not come across as crude propaganda media, so perhaps the arrest of its Editor-in-Chief is unjustified, and certainly he must be afforded due process and humane treatment.

However, the Committee to Protect Journalists @CPJAfrica, Human Rights Watch, and others who are protesting this, overlook a few things. For a start, the founder and actual leader of Addis Standard, Tsedale Lemma, sits pretty in Germany from where she not only platforms but is vocally supportive of each and every terrorist rebel militia in her home country. If the honorable spokespersons of those prestigious international rights organizations were the ones living in towns with paramilitaries lurking on the outskirts, entering frequently to kill anything from security staff to elected officials and their families, I somehow suspect that they would be less principled in their defense of freedom of expression.
