I have just completed a series of four professional development videos on the subject of teaching effective whole-class reading lessons.
These videos contain high-quality footage of me teaching each part of the reading lesson structures from Primary Reading Simplified.

Vocabulary isn’t “extra.” It’s knowledge.
“When students have the words to describe ideas, their ability to see, discriminate, and think critically changes.” — @Doug_Lemov
In our recent webinar, he explained why knowledge starts with words.

Our Pre-Primary students are soaring with the Explicit Maths Program in place. We were a pilot school for this program, and will continue to use it in 2025 and beyond.

When I became Education Minister 12 months ago, little did I know I’d be stepping into a half-century-long policy debate about how we teach our kids the basics of reading.
The reading wars are not quite over, but they should be.
My op-ed in today’s @australian.

@jdtdobson Updating my school's website is moving up my 'to do list'. It's near the top of the list.

The real problem with learning styles instruction is that the reward is not worth the effort. There are far more effective teaching methods that teachers could be using to improve student learning.
One of the critical mistakes in curriculum design is focusing solely on what interests students rather than emphasising the importance of knowledge that transcends their experiences.

@rdkrdk@greg_ashman But why should we put up with the nonsense now we know better? In ITE (as in early career) we trust we are being given best practice information from those in these positions of leadership/higher academics. But we aren't in many cases.
Lots of discourse around “maths anxiety” this week. I suspect it has more to do with ineffective instruction rather than some specific anguish unique to only mathematics. Teach explicitly, give every student a taste of success and watch them flourish.
