On A Thurs Morning (right about now) 6-Yrs Ago Teams Of Astronomers Around The World Were On A Search.
Earlier on 8/17/17 (5:41am PT), #GravitationalWaves were recorded by @LIGO & @ego_virgo and 1.7 secs later gamma rays were detected by @NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope!!
#OTD in 2017, the @LIGO + Virgo collaboration detected gravitational waves from colliding black holes.
Just 3 days later, it viewed for the first time colliding neutron stars in both gravitational waves and light.

For those who would like to pay their respects to Ron, his family are collecting donations to bring him home from Illinois, where he worked at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to be laid to rest in his beloved mountains of Northern Arizona

We are sad to share news of the passing of Dr. Rhondale (Ron) Tso. Ron was a valued member of our collaboration. You may learn more about him from this interview from his grad school days

Our thoughts are with Ron's family and friends

On this day exactly 20 years ago the Virgo detector was inaugurated, with an important ceremony on site attended by all the key scientific and political actors and many members of the Virgo and @LIGO Collaborations, who came from all over the world (1/3)

🔔IceCube results to be published in @ScienceMagazine tomorrow!
For the first time, IceCube found evidence of high-energy neutrino emission from our galaxy ➡️ https://t.co/ErPz4zJyMi

The detection of neutrino emission from the Milky Way at the @NSF-supported IceCube represents the 3rd source of high-energy neutrinos. More sensitive analyses, coupled with the implementation of machine learning methods, were key in the breakthrough.
LIGO Hanford staff joined together this morning to listen to the exciting discussion of @NANOGrav year data set. Congratulations to the entire @IPTA_GW on these amazing results. #gravitationalwaves
Exciting news! An analysis of NANOGrav’s 15-year data shows evidence for the existence of low-frequency gravitational waves. Teams in Australia, China, Europe, and India have also independently reported their results today. @EPTAGW@InPTA_GW@ARC_OzGRav@CSIRO_ATNF
We see early signs of a Gravitational Wave background in our combined dataset with @EPTAGW.
These results corroborate with those from @NANOGrav and PPTA @CSIRO_ATNF@ARC_OzGRav
Read along in this thread to know this discovery was made and it's consequences!
We are founding members of the International Pulsar Timing Array (@IPTA_GW, https://t.co/zoWJ3lBXOi), a consortium of consortia, in which we collaborate to cross-check our results and make plans for future improvemens of our work.
@EPTAGW, an international collaboration of European astronomers, together with Indian and Japanese colleagues from the Indian Pulsar Timing Array @InPTA_GW, have published the results of more than 25
years of observations from six of the World's most sensitive radio telescopes.
The IPTA is truly an international collaboration with radio telescopes located across the globe. This graphic made by @HannahThankful breaks it down by collaboration. 📡🌍
